This review is from: Do They Know Its Christmas? (Audio CD)
open letter to Midge Ure (producer of Band Aid 20, who denied Paul McCartney a chance to sing, since he was "too old").
Dear Midge,
Happy Holidays, first and foremost.
I'm glad that the new Band Aid remake was made. This reminds the world that the Famine in Africa still exists and that need to concentrate on that. That was a great idea.
However, I do have some small complaints.
Why the HECK was Paul McCartney not offered a line in Band Aid 20's remake? Too old??? Come on! 1) he sings, writes, and plays better than ALL those artists combined. 2) if it weren't for him, John, Ringo, and George, those artists wouldn't be here today!
This is not bloody American Idol! It's about saving lives! Age is irrelevant in this issue.Poeple of all ages should be involved!
This is also complete disrespect to a legend and a pioneer of British Rock. Who do you think made it possible for UK rock artists to succeed?
Perhaps a small line, such as "throw your arms around the world at Christmas time" would have been enough.
Did you see Quincy Jones telling Ray Charles that he couldn't sing in "We Are The World" because he was much older than the rest???
Asa result: Ray sang and shined in that song!
Mr. Ure, you are the lowest form of scum for lowering Sir Paul to the status of a "session player".
Why do you think he was even given the title "Sir Paul"?
Love him or hate him, the entire world agrees that Paul McCartney is a legendary pioneer of British Rock. 100 years from now, people will still listen to his music. I can't say the same for Robbie Williams or Dido. It's a shame that you, obviously, do not agree.
You wouldn't even have a job if it weren't for Paul, John, George, and Ringo.
BTW...Band Aid 20's remake is quite crappy. Go and read the Amazon.com customers' reviews. Not even Bono could save them. Adding in Sir Paul's vocals wouldn't have made a big difference, however, it would have been a lot more symbolic in the fact that 3 generations of European Rock stars would have been present on that record.
Mr.Ure, you could have had a landmark recording. You really screwed up.
And in case you're wondering why your single is number 1, look no further than tracks 2 and 3...people buy it to hear the ORIGINAL Band Aid tracks. In fact, everyone skips to track 2 as soon as they play that cd.
And if Robbie Williams or Dido could not make the session, they should NOT have been on board. Sir Paul should have been added.
Saving Africa is not about how young you are. People of all ages should be involved, so PAUL should have sung.
But, unfortunately, you were trying too hard to target teeny-boppers.
Mr.Ure, I sincerely hope you never again make another Band Aid record and that you apologize to Paul (who volunteered to sing).
