The doctor is in—but he’s not happy about it. After developing a crippling fear of blood, hotshot London surgeon Martin Ellingham (Martin Clunes, Men Behaving Badly) is forced to retrain as a GP and relocate to the charming seaside village of Portwenn. Dour, discourteous, and dismissive, he immediately clashes with Portwenn’s quirky villagers.
In these four complete series, Doc Martin catches the eye of the most beautiful woman in Portwenn (Caroline Catz, Murder in Suburbia), tests the patience of his long-suffering aunt (Stephanie Cole, Tenko), and repeatedly hurts feelings as he heals bodies. Martin Clunes delivers an uproarious lead performance, aided by an outstanding supporting cast, in this award-winning fish-out-of-water comedy.
SERIES 1 “Outstanding” —The Globe and Mail (Canada)
Meet Martin Ellingham (Martin Clunes, Men Behaving Badly), an eminent physician with a nasty disposition. Forced to give up his career as a London surgeon after developing a fear of blood, he takes a job as GP in the sleepy Cornish village of Portwenn. His irascible manner and permanent scowl soon have the town in an uproar; he insults each patient he sees and offends nearly everyone else. The only person who’s glad to see him is his aunt Joan.
Quirky characters, comic situations, and impossibly picturesque scenery have made Doc Martin a smash hit on both sides of the Atlantic. Clunes is brilliant as the arrogant physician with a head full of knowledge but no people skills. Will he throw in the towel or succumb to the charms of village life, including those of lovely schoolteacher Louisa Glasson (Caroline Catz, Murder in Suburbia)?
SERIES 2 “This show is just what the doctor ordered” —TV Times
He’s surly, tactless, self-centered, and uptight—but he’s the only doctor in town.
As a hard-charging London surgeon, Martin Ellingham (Martin Clunes, Men Behaving Badly) didn’t need a bedside manner. His patients were unconscious, so he could be as rude and arrogant as he pleased. All that changes when he develops a crippling fear of blood and is forced to give up surgery. Now a GP in a sleepy, picturesque Cornish fishing village, Doc Martin offends everyone in town, including the one person he wants to impress, beautiful teacher Louisa Glasson (Caroline Catz, Murder in Suburbia). Getting her attention proves even more difficult when Louisa’s old flame returns to the village and becomes his new rival.
Martin Clunes shines in this award-winning comic drama set amid eccentric townsfolk and spectacular scenery. As the doctor says, “It’s good to be loathsome.”
SERIES 3 “Delightful … You’ll be hooked in no time.” —The Globe and Mail (Canada)
Dr. Martin Ellingham (Martin Clunes, Men Behaving Badly) is brilliant, dedicated, and highly efficient. He’s also brusque, abrasive, and terrified of blood. Once a successful London surgeon, he’s now a GP in the idyllic Cornish fishing village of Portwenn, where he’s every bit as eccentric as the villagers he serves.
With his terrible bedside manner, he has insulted everyone in town several times over. His relationship with Louisa (Caroline Catz, Murder in Suburbia) seems dead in the water. And he faces fresh challenges: The town’s new constable has narcolepsy. Martin’s beloved aunt Joan is aging. His receptionist, Pauline, is bored. He’s also being pursued by a hypochondriac hotelier, much to Louisa’s dismay. All of which make the good doctor even grumpier—and his antics even funnier. “The unlovable Doc Martin will win your heart” —Brattleboro (VT) Reformer.
SERIES 4 “A smart, gentle comedy with loads of wit and zest” —The Globe and Mail (Canada)
After his wedding day disaster, Dr. Martin Ellingham (Martin Clunes, Men Behaving Badly) is even grumpier and ruder than before. His former fiancée, Louisa (Caroline Catz, Murder in Suburbia), has left the village to avoid embarrassment. The doctor himself plans to return to London as a surgeon—if he can conquer his fear of blood. But it’s hard to leave a place as charming and full of eccentric characters as Portwenn by the sea.
Matters quickly become complicated when Louisa moves back with startling news. Meanwhile, Martin’s old flame, Edith Montgomery (Lia Williams), takes a job at the local hospital and sets her sights on the doc. Sparks and rumors fly as patients crowd his office: a shouting oil rigger, the inept local constable, a woman who sees her dead husband’s ghost, and a man who eats his own hair. Facing all this, will Doc Martin leave Portwenn after all?

We're hooked on Doc Martin!,
This review is from: Doc Martin Series 1-4 Collection (DVD)
I call my sister in England two or three times a month, and awhile back when I called, she said, "Hold on Rob, my favourite show is coming on the telly - give me a moment to set my VCR to tape it." Naturally I asked what show it was, and she said, "Doc Martin. It's about an irascible family doctor in a Cornish seaside town. It stars Martin Clunes, from "Men Behaving Badly," and I just love it." I vaguely remembered seeing Doc Martin listed on the TV guide menus in Canada, but had paid no attention to it. So we started to watch it (one of the earlier series was on either TVO, SCN or Knowledge, I can't remember which, and a newer series was on PBS Detroit). My wife and I became hooked on the show! Naturally, when you start watching something that's been on for a while, there's a little catching-up to do (Who's that redheaded woman who keeps popping in and out of his life?). Although each episode has it's own plotline, the characters themselves evolve. So the natural answer was to buy all the past episodes. We haven't actually found time to watch them yet - we're looking forward to the lazy summer evenings to settle down and start at the beginning.
