I loved this product although it was late to arrive, It arrived in a fantastic condition and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the content in it. The Art cards were gorgeous and the Comic book was a cherry topper. Now the Sonic screw driver worked great and I will cherish it forever. The BLURAY's were amazing, and they come packed with extras never before seen on Bluray or DVD. I love it and will keep it in top condition forever.

Having just a couple of months ago purchased Season 6 and Season 7 on DVD, I had absolutely no intention on buying this. My collection was already nearly complete and it seemed like rip off to buy everything again. But I started crunching some numbers. I still hadn't found Season 5 at a good price. I still had purchased Season 4 complete specials. I still needed a couple of the other Christmas specials that weren't on the DVD's I already owned. When I added it all up, I was looking at $150 to complete my collection. For an extra $150 I could get a cool sonic screwdriver, and upgrade the whole collection to 1080p. It just seemed to good to pass up.

So curse you, BBC, you got me to do what I claimed I would never do, which is deliberately buy the same episodes twice. The marketing was genius. There are just enough goodies to make even those with complete collections tempted, and the price is right for those who are curious but haven't purchased a single disc yet, to take the plunge. They probably even got a fair number of people who normally only pirate the videos just so they could get the collectibles. Absolute genius.

The blu-ray's don't disappoint. I haven't taken the remote out of the package yet, so I can't comment it yet. Based on the instructions it can perform 39 functions of any IR device. Basically copies the function from your existing remote. So this is no good for replacing a lost remote, but it is very usable as an extra remote. Only it will obviously take considerable practice to use it. If you visit a friend who also has one, it is unlikely they will have programmed it the same way, so you will not know how to use their remote...

BTW. The other reviewing was wrong. Seasons 1 - 4 are not upconverted from a lower resolution.

Pluses :

Seasons 1-4 on blu-ray for the first time

Doctor Who at the proms extended version or the first time – and on blu-ray (approximately 90' where the previous version lasted approximately 60').

Minuses :

Packaging (the box itself) is of poor quality (and worse in my case, the outside box and the comic book inside it came damaged with no possibility for an exchange).

The screwdriver remote control comes, not in a box like the separately sold version, but in a blister that you actually have to destroy to open. This is supposed to be a collector's item, and an expensive one. I have read every review I could find, here, on youtube, and more, but found no one who dared to open it. This is the most idiotic thing ever, I wonder if they fired the person responsible for this nonsense.

Missing bonuses : I couldn't actually check that one myself yet, but I did read complains about missing bonuses on the blu-ray version, compared to the previous dvd version.

And :

Unnecessary lists as bonuses.

The Day of the Doctor, and the Time of the Doctor, still missing if you want the complete Matt Smith years.

If it were just for the contents of the blu-ray, it would deserve at least four stars. But because they turned a collector's item into a crappy thing, I can't give it more than two.

Finally it arrived.
I am so happy to have the original 4 nu-who serieses on blu, sure they are upscaled but having them in a case where they are not prone to coming off tray and getting scratched up is nice and a necessary upgrade.
The other stuff is alright, I would have loved it if they had a little squishy Adipose figure or a model TARDIS inside the useless clear boxy thing that is meant to fill up space.

All in all, a great upgrade for any Whovian and a nice lead up to the 50th Anniversary Special later this month.

Enjoy! :D

I am very pleased with this box set. The price point is very reasonable, given the number of seasons you get as well as the additional bonuses (including the remote control. which typically retails for around $100 on its own.) While I don't plan on using the remote, it does look very cool, and makes for a great display piece for any Doctor Who fan. While the first four seasons were shot in standard definition (and won't look as good as some of later seasons that were shot in HD,) they still look a lot better than their previous DVD versions.

At this price you can't go wrong by buying it. Each of the individual seasons are priced at 60$ or more on amazon and that's for DVDs. In this set, you also get them on blu-ray instead and you get a sonic screwdriver! Also as of writing this review amazon.ca is selling it cheaper then amazon.com which don't happens often.

3 stars only right now as I'm confused about the amazon.ca/com image/picture listing.

Image 1 shows all the 7 series boxes + the specials box + a box with the 3 new series Doctors on the cover = 9 boxes shown.
Image 2 shows all the 7 series boxes + the specials box, but doesn't show the box with the 3 new series Doctors on the cover = 8 boxes shown.

Amazon, which one are we pre-ordering?

UPDATE:
As I said, I was confused about which box set I would be ordering on amazon. So I waited until the release date, today - November 5th, to go out to a store and hold one in my hands.

What I bought for $299.99 was the Image 1 set that states on the front:
Complete Series 1-7
Limited Edition Blu-ray Gift Set
29 Discs Total (I see that amazon.ca has now upgraded their website from 28 to 29 discs that was previously listed)
Three Art Cards (smaller than shown)
Exclusive Comic Book (smaller than shown)
Three New-To-Disc Specials
Also Includes Universal Remote Control Sonic Screwdriver (you can't check this out unless you destroy it's plastic 'bubble' packaging)

I see that amazon.ca has deleted the Image 2 on its website!

Upgraded to a 4 star rating for this set I bought at HMV.
