Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

What bizarre comic riffs can the incomparable Ellmann spin from a romantic medical mismatch? Breathtakingly brutal ones, as per usual, for the author of Man or Mango, but also bright, direct and playful—and full of CAPS. After Ellmann's enormous nurse, Jen, takes a job in "A RURAL BACKWATER" of Great Britain with general practitioner Dr. Roger Lewis, her every move is chronicled in excruciating, digressive, sidesplitting detail. ("THE JOB INTERVIEW ITSELF" is followed by "JEN'S BODY," which is followed by "WHAT'S IT REALLY LIKE TO HAVE A BODY?") Jen's obesity is mercilessly harped- on throughout, as are her oversized appetites for food, sex, violence and her handsome new employer—who is married, with children. Roger, who is more than game, happily scams patients and shrugs off lawsuit-worthy mistakes, quickly winning Jen's wicked heart. Their unlikely affair, complicated by annoying patients ("their frequent need to DIE or have BABIES") and Roger's sexual indiscretions, accommodates biting observations on the state of contemporary medicine and romance. Graphic medically and sexually, Ellmann's latest is not for the squeamish, but it's a hilarious exaggeration of a profession's foibles. (Mar.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally gross, Dec 25 2008
By Christy Leigh Stewart "Good Mourning Sunshine" - Published on Amazon.com
Not chick-lit. The main character may have a purse fetish, but I bet Bridget Jones never defecated in her's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for the easily offended, Dec 11 2007
By K-Bright - Published on Amazon.com
Forget my title comment... this book isn't for the offendable. It was strange, crude, disconnected and wonderful. If you have a taste for the quirky, read this book. I will never look at purses the same way again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Crazyass novel by the wickedly funny Lucy Ellmann, Mar 6 2006

This review is from: Doctors & Nurses (Paperback)
Wow...Lucy Ellmann is not for everyone, and I actually thought Dot in the Universe is a better book, but I still heartily recommend Doctors and Nurses. That said, this book is not for everyone. Ellman's over the top style and in your face grossness may freak out the weak of heart, but if you like very dark, biting humor this books is for you!
