From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6-Erika is about to start sixth grade, and she's worried about how to deal with Queen Kyla's teasing. The girls were once friends, but on Kyla's only visit to her house, she was turned off by the family's three dogs. Now, she refers derisively to Erika as Dog Girl. Then, when Erika and her friend Mercedes almost complete a school project, one of the dogs eats it. Distressed, Erika is responsible for another dog running away. A frantic search ensues, during which she is forced to trust a classmate whom she was afraid would laugh at her. In the end, with Mercedes's help, she stands up to Kyla without becoming a bully herself. This story has believable dialogue and characterization. It is refreshing to read a good middle grade novel sans tragedy, featuring a likable, average girl finding her way in life.
