Review

I loved the book and I could not put it down. It really made me think about the purpose of life. At the end, I cried. (Temple Grandin, New York Times bestselling author of Animals in Translation)

Marley and Me combined with Tuesdays with Morrie. (Kirkus Reviews)

A Dog's Purpose is the most accurate window into a dog's mind I have ever encountered. I couldn't put it down, and once I finished it, I actually felt is if my dog, who had recently passed away, was speaking to me through this book. A triumph, impeccably detailed with intelligence and heart. (Dina Zaphiris, Host, "Petfinder" Animal Planet)

A Dog's Purpose takes the reader on a special journey, exploring the mysterious and marvelous bond between people and animals. Bruce Cameron spins a tale of tails that wag, lessons that are learned, and special relationships that shine with courage and devotion. A good book to read with your best friend at your side. (Tony La Russa, manager of the St. Louis Cardinals and co founder of the Animal Rescue Foundation)

Finally, a fictional dog who is a real dog! Anyone who has ever loved a dog needs to read this wise, touching, often hilarious book. Bailey, the narrator, tells the absolute dog truth about how intuitive your dog is, how profoundly your dog loves you (and how very much they love to roll in road kill, and how puzzled they are that you don't love it, too). Most importantly, this book allows the reader to intimately experience a genuine dog's eye view of the bond between dogs and humans, and how nothing, not even death, can ever end that bond. (Dr. Marty Becker, Resident Veterinarian on Good Morning America and the Dr. Oz Show)

This book is a classic. A beautiful, uplifting, tenderly told, frequently funny, and exquisitely moving story…I am awash in the tears of recognition every dog lover will shed when they read this remarkable book. (Iris Dart, New York Times bestselling author of Beaches)

This is an exquisite, magical, fantastic book. I devoured it in a, "I-resent-anything-that-prevents-me-from-getting-back-to-the-book-why-do-I-have-to-work-my-kid-is-almost-six-can't-he-drive-himself-to-school?" way. I adored Bailey, the dog narrator, and though I got teary, I absolutely loved this book. You should quickly fetch "A Dog's Purpose," an exemplar of the literary canine canon. (Duncan Strauss, Host,"Talking Animals" NPR)

This wonderfully imagined, inspirational tale is told by a spiritual guide dog who teaches us that our life's purpose is best accomplished when the word "love" is a verb. Bailey the dog knows the profound truths: there is no death, and fear is our greatest enemy. If you are a human, you need to read this treasure of a book. (Dannion Brinkley, New York Times Best Selling Author, "Saved By the Light")

I finished this book and wanted to read it all over again. A funny, enchanting, and utterly believable story of the multiple lives of a most articulate canine, A Dog's Purpose convinced me that there must be reincarnation and that author W. Bruce Cameron was once a dog. How else could he so poignantly detail life, love, and loyalty from the four-pawed point of view? (Victoria Moran, author of Living a Charmed Life)

Usually when I read a book this brilliantly written, I wish I had written it, but in this case I'm just grateful it was written at all. For years I grieved and agonized over the choices I made in caring for my dog at the end of her life, but after hearing from Bailey how deeply our dogs feel what we humans go through, I know my dog loved me till the end, and loves me still, as I love her. This book healed me. (Cathryn Michon, author of The Grrl Genius Guide to Life)

Reincarnation is certainly nothing new when it comes to plot devices for many fiction novels. However, when the individual being reincarnated and then narrating the subsequent experiences is a dog, it tends to get your attention right out of the gate.

Having multiple perspectives through which to view your life can illustrate just what your time on Earth has meant. George Bailey was the beloved character in the holiday classic "It's A Wonderful Life" who lamented that his life had been an abject failure, and then (with the assistance of an angel in training) received an opportunity to see what his life may have turned out like, had he never been born. Bailey, in "A Dog's Purpose" follows a similar whimsical path, living several different lives to learn his function in the grand scheme of things.

As the inquisitive pup is reincarnated over and over to live amazingly diverse lives he (occasionally she) inevitably comes to ponder what many humans do - what am I here for, what is my purpose? The attention to detail by author W. Bruce Cameron engages the reader, from items as small and realistic as the bugs that captivate the newborn pup's attention in one passage, to the accuracy of the dog's feelings to both his siblings, and the assortment of people that enter each of his lives. The first time the young pup meets a human child, he is overcome by emotions that bond them both for life.

The richness in "A Dog's Purpose" is the accumulation of these moments as Bailey, somewhat like Bill Murray's character in "Groundhog Day" awakens from the end of one life to begin the journey of another - with all the subsequent relationships, dramas and discoveries.

Could not offer a better insight into canine thoughts and actions.
Any dog owner would recognize their own dog's traits after reading this deep account of a dog's innermost feelings.
It will make you happy, it will make you sad but you will feel so much better for reading it and you will have fun in the future watching a dog's thought process.

I highly recommend this book to dog lovers. Beautiful, so well written. I could not put this book down and finished it within less than a week! As a dog owner, I found myself being able to relate to this book. The story is written from a dog's perspective, and as crazy as it sounds it has made me more aware of my dog's body language. Dog owners will definitely enjoy this book... I laughed and cried (ALOT!) and gave my beagle a big hug as soon as I finished reading the book. Have already ordered "a dog's journey"!

A Dog's Purpose made me laugh and cry hysterically. I found myself completely engrossed by this novel. I had to start pacing my reading because I did not want the experience to end. Every night I would hug my dog and tell him how much I loved him. I admit I did this every night even before I read this book but now I squeeze him a little bit harder. Poor guy!

This is one of the greatest books I have ever read. I laughed, I cried, and I hugged my dog harder than ever before. It's one of those "mainly" feel good books and I could not wait to read the sequel! You will never look at your dog the same after reading this!

I picked up this book based on all the raving 5 star reviews but didn't find it as "amazing" as some did. So it was a bit of a let down. It is a good story tho - just not a 5 star to me. I did enjoy seeing how a dog thinks and I know the author did a lot of research on dog behaviour. I have to confess tho that the book made me feel very guilty about how I had treated my husband's dogs. I didn't adore them as much as he did and can understand a little bit more from this book how they must have felt. Having read this book, I don't think I can look at a dog the same way again. Now when I pass a dog on the street, I wonder what he's thinking!

This was the most amazing book! I love animal stories and was lead to this book as a suggestion by Amazon (based on another book I purchased). I laughed, I cried, I could not stop turning the page wondering what will happen next to the Dog finding his purpose. It was so unpredictable and so easy to relate to, especially if you love dogs (or any animal)! Even if you don't like dogs, you will love the read on this story. It is told in first person, which makes it easy to relate to! Certainly has made me look at my dog from a different angle wondering (although it is a fiction) if maybe there is some truth to it! Definite must read!

I was already a great fan of dogs before reading this book but now I believe I see them more fully and love them even more even though for reasons beyond my control I don't have one. Bruce Cameron, the author of this delightful book, must have been a dog at some point in his evolution because there were many times I had to remind myself that this was not a dog writing the book but a human being. His evocative style was pure genius and I hope he continues to write more books because based on this work (and I read a fair bit across many different genres) he is deserving of our attention in a big way.
