Book Description

May 24 2011

This is the remarkable story of one endearing dog’s search for his purpose over the course of several lives. More than just another charming dog story, A Dog’s Purpose touches on the universal quest for an answer to life's most basic question: Why are we here?

Surprised to find himself reborn as a rambunctious golden-haired puppy after a tragically short life as a stray mutt, Bailey’s search for his new life’s meaning leads him into the loving arms of 8-year-old Ethan. During their countless adventures Bailey joyously discovers how to be a good dog.

But this life as a beloved family pet is not the end of Bailey’s journey. Reborn as a puppy yet again, Bailey wonders—will he ever find his purpose?

Heartwarming, insightful, and often laugh-out-loud funny, A Dog's Purpose is not only the emotional and hilarious story of a dog's many lives, but also a dog's-eye commentary on human relationships and the unbreakable bonds between man and man's best friend. This moving and beautifully crafted story teaches us that love never dies, that our true friends are always with us, and that every creature on earth is born with a purpose.

Review

Praise for A Dog’s Purpose

A Dog’s Purpose is the most accurate window into a dog’s mind I have ever encountered. I couldn’t put it down, and once I finished it, I actually felt as if my dog, who had recently passed away, was speaking to me through this book. a triumph, impeccably detailed with intelligence and heart. I feel like I have been waiting my whole life for this book.”—Dina Zaphiris, Host of

Petfinder

on Animal Planet

“ This book is a classic. a beautiful, uplifting, tenderly told, frequently funny, and exquisitely moving story....I am awash in the tears of recognition every dog lover will shed when they read this remarkable book.”

—Iris Dart,

new york Times bestselling author of

Beaches

“ A funny, enchanting, and utterly believable story of the multiple lives of a most articulate canine,

A Dog’s

Purpose

convinced me that there

must be reincarnation and that author

W. Bruce cameron was once a dog.

How else could he so poignantly

detail life, love, and loyalty from

the four-pawed point of view?”

—Victoria Moran, author of

living a Charmed life

“ This is an exquisite, magical, fantastic book. you should quickly fetch

A Dog’s Purpose,

an exemplar of the literary canine canon.”—Duncan Strauss, Host, Talking Animals, NPR

“ Usually when I read a book this brilliantly written, I wish I had written it, but in this case I’m just grateful it was written at all. For years I grieved and agonized over the choices I made in caring for my dog at the end of her life, but after hearing from Bailey how deeply our dogs feel what we humans go through, I know my dog loved me till the end, and loves me still, as I love her. this book healed me.”

5.0 out of 5 stars A whimsical delight! Oct 19 2010
Format:Hardcover
Reincarnation is certainly nothing new when it comes to plot devices for many fiction novels. However, when the individual being reincarnated and then narrating the subsequent experiences is a dog, it tends to get your attention right out of the gate.

Having multiple perspectives through which to view your life can illustrate just what your time on Earth has meant. George Bailey was the beloved character in the holiday classic "It's A Wonderful Life" who lamented that his life had been an abject failure, and then (with the assistance of an angel in training) received an opportunity to see what his life may have turned out like, had he never been born. Bailey, in "A Dog's Purpose" follows a similar whimsical path, living several different lives to learn his function in the grand scheme of things.

As the inquisitive pup is reincarnated over and over to live amazingly diverse lives he (occasionally she) inevitably comes to ponder what many humans do - what am I here for, what is my purpose? The attention to detail by author W. Bruce Cameron engages the reader, from items as small and realistic as the bugs that captivate the newborn pup's attention in one passage, to the accuracy of the dog's feelings to both his siblings, and the assortment of people that enter each of his lives. The first time the young pup meets a human child, he is overcome by emotions that bond them both for life.

The richness in "A Dog's Purpose" is the accumulation of these moments as Bailey, somewhat like Bill Murray's character in "Groundhog Day" awakens from the end of one life to begin the journey of another - with all the subsequent relationships, dramas and discoveries. About three-quarters through the book, he comes to terms with his own mortality - but there is still more of his life to be lived, and lives that he will occupy doing so.

When it does arrive the finale is equal measures heart-wrenching, and heart-warming - as Bailey comes to terms with his purpose in life, which just may have you thinking about your own...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, well wirtten!! Jun 22 2012
Format:Paperback
I highly recommend this book to dog lovers. Beautiful, so well written. I could not put this book down and finished it within less than a week! As a dog owner, I found myself being able to relate to this book. The story is written from a dog's perspective, and as crazy as it sounds it has made me more aware of my dog's body language. Dog owners will definitely enjoy this book... I laughed and cried (ALOT!) and gave my beagle a big hug as soon as I finished reading the book. Have already ordered "a dog's journey"!
