Product Description

Amazon.ca

While many of Gordon Lightfoot's 1970s collaborations with producer Lenny Waronker resulted in larger-sounding records that minimized Lightfoot's guitar playing for extravagant orchestrations, Don Quixote is as pure a folk record as you can imagine. A three-piece band provides support, and strings do turn up on six tracks, but Lightfoot stands front and centre here. Title aside, Don Quixote is decidedly Canadian-sounding and moves like a glacial train trip across the country. From the soft, concertina-enhanced shimmer of "Christian Island (Georgian Bay)" to the now-classic ramblin' man tune "Alberta Bound," featuring Ry Cooder on a raging mandolin solo, this is Lightfoot at his most elegant. --Matt Galloway

5.0 out of 5 stars Super songs by a super songwriter, Jan 17 2004

Summer Side of Life is my personal favourite of Gord's, but this one is right up there. Simple, unpretentious, wonderful songs. If you like Lightfoot and haven't heard this album I strongly recommend you give it a listen

5.0 out of 5 stars Top of his Game, July 11 2003

This review is from: Don Quixote (Audio CD)
I'm like most of the other reviewers in that I think that this is Lightfoot's best album by far!! I have had this LP for over 30 years and have worn it out, so it's time to buy the CD.

Nevertheless, this album does have its weak points. Three songs are mediocre at best. Patriot's Dream is a good antiwar song but the music and the lyrics don't work together. Ode to Big Blue is dull and repetitive, reminiscent of Edmund Fitzgerald. On Susan's Floor is neither lyrically or musically inspiring.

On the other hand, the other 8 tracks are nothing short of outstanding. The best cuts are the title track, Second Cup of Coffee, Alberta Bound, and Beautiful. "Beautiful" is probably the finest love song ever written, with stunning acoustic guitar work.

I just can't get enough of this album. It reminds me of how good I feel when I visit Canada. Very uplifting and entertaining!!

This is a Great Album. A trip down Memory Lane for me. I have almost all Gordon Lightfoots albums on Vinyl but I haven't had my Empire Scientific Turntable set up for a long while and I needed a "Lightfoot Fix". I remember waiting hopefully for his next release after the Albums from 1969 and 1970 and it doesn't disappoint.
