"Pleasure is different from happiness.",

This review is from: Dorian Gray (DVD)
In Victorian London, young Dorian Gray (Ben Barnes) inherits a grand house and makes friends with the posh crowd. He has his portrait painted and falls under the influence of hedonistic Lord Henry (Colin Firth) who encourages Dorian to indulge his baser passions. As the years pass, Dorian becomes cruel and violent but his appearance never changes; only his portrait reflects the vicious, soulless man he has become.Ben Barnes is so flawlessly handsome that it's almost distracting. He can act but looks like a teenager and seems too young to play Dorian, in my opinion. Colin Firth is very good playing the truly loathsome puppet-master who leads Dorian down the wrong path. The Victorian period is faithfully recreated and the costumes and sets are lavish, although much of the charm is lost when the story inexplicably moves into the WWI era. There are also some changes in characters and plot from the Oscar Wilde novel, but I think the film is entertaining - if you haven't seen the Hurd Hatfield version made in 1945. That one is better all-around - darker, more serious, and scarier. It's fun to see them both.

This review is from: Dorian Gray (DVD)
I'm re-reading the novel to find the discrepancies, and certainly there are some liberties taken with the story. I think, overall, that Lord Henry is too sinister; more of a devil than a devil's advocate - I think a distinction can be made. Dorian is seen here as a total hedonist - searching for absolute physical satisfaction with a mania for drugs and sex. Not too subtle or intellectual and I found the orgy scenes both cringe-worthy and boring. It was all a little over-the-top, which is often the way with film. I found it worth watching, however, despite its faults; every film maker has their own take. I'd read the novel, too, if you're interested in the source.

The movie was very had to understand because of the accent and fast talking,I would have to watch it a few times to understand what they where saying and what was the story about.
