4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Canadian Pop-Folk, July 9 2004

Ahhh, the days of the hockey mullet, 1980's chic, and Anglo-French fighting. Roch Voisine somehow embodies that and more.

I got into this record back in 1990 when I was living in France. The video for "La Berceuse Du Petit Diable" was on, and I knew then that I had to find out more about this talented artist. Once I got back to North America I also knew that I was going to have to take a jaunt up to Montreal to get at this stuff. I'm glad I did.

"Double" is a French and English album with sensitive songwriting, fine production, terrific playing, and fine singing by Roch that is in the best Canadian tradition. A terrific Anglo-French troubador whose sincerity and romantic approach to life have made him a major star in the French speaking world, Voisine is definitely more than just a pretty face.

Both the French and English songs are strong. Among the French language highlights (in addition to "Berceuse") are "Elle A Peur Des Hirondelles" and "Au Bout De Lile." The songs sung in English are pure folk-pop delights, especially "A Fishing Day" (which has a terrific chorus) and the reworked version of "Helene" which still sounds better in French.

Hey Roch, when are you coming down to Austin to do a show? Our annual Bastille Day celebration at the historic French Legation would be a perfect time!

I own many Roch Voisine albums but this collection is my absolute favourite. It showcases his voice to its fullest, and the power of his vocals shines through in both English and French.
If you've just discovered Roch and are wondering which of his CDs to purchase, this one is your best bet.
