My 7-year old daughter is an avid reader. She swept through the Judy Moody and Junie B. Jones books, so I thought 'Just Grace and the Double Surprise' would be a good book for her. We both read the book separately, and Kyra's dictated review is below.
My take? 'Just Grace' is age appropriate and written well for it's intended audience, dealing with issues they might face in language they can understand. My daughter is still over a year away from 3rd grade, yet she really got into it. Charise Harper not only writes engagingly for young girls, but her art is entertainingly childish while not seeming forced. Her understanding of the 8-year old mind puts mine to shame, and it shows in her writing. The topics discussed have a positive message, making them very family friendly. It looks like 'Just Grace' is going to be the next, best series in our house. Time to go back and read the first six books!

*Kyra's review* (WARNING: Spoilers?)
Grace's best friend Minnie was going to get a baby. Her mother said it was going to be a girl. Grace always wanted a dog and one day she got it. Minnie went to go get the baby and she was so sad because somebody already adopted the baby and her mother saw a boy baby and adopted that baby instead. She was so sad that she cried in her bed.
The 3 year old boy's name was Robert. And so Grace gave Robert some stuff like a superhero cape, a comic book. Minnie's love began to grow for Robert. They went to school one day and their friend (another Robert) put Grace in a bad mood. When they went down for recess, Grace was still in a bad mood. Then she turned into a good mood because she found out that she did the best at her homework. The end.
Opinion:
I liked this book a lot. It's like a child wrote the book---because the pictures are child-like.

I hope this helps you decide if 'Just Grace and the Double Surprise' would be a worthwhile addition to your little one's library.

Grace has a best friend, Mimi, and Mimi is expecting a new adopted sister to arrive. Grace thought it would be nice to write a book for this new sister, because her mom told her babies soak up everything like a sponge. Grace is quite practical and knew exactly what the book should contain, and she went about her project. Grace is such a cool character for a third grader. She is intelligent, funny and quite inventive. She knows her parents very well, and thinks she knows when she has been good and when she has been bad. So, on top of being intuitive, she is a wonderful friend.
When Mimi's sister turns out to be a brother, the world turns upside down for her. At the same time Grace gets something new. Grace has an idea that will help Mimi and her brother come together. I just love Grace. She is the kind of young girl we would all want for a good friend. She is also a wonderful daughter. Put this all together, and we have the best kind of series for young girls. My 8 year old granddaughter is going to love Grace as much as I do.
Charise Mericle Harper is the author and illustrator for this book. She is remarkable with her insight into the world of an eight year old. Her illustrations are so on the mark, funny and creative. Can't wait for the next 'Just Grace' book.
Highly Recommended. prisrob 06-21-11

Grace and Mimi are excited as they wait for the expected new arrival of Mimi's brand new sister. However, one unexpected surprise is that the new arrival will be a brother instead. Grace has mixed emotions about the upcoming event as she becomes nervous and worried about how her best friend will react. What other big surprise is in store for Grace, and how does she handle it? This children's book is highly recommended for third grade readers, teachers, and parents. Charise Mericle Harper created a delightful story, with funny illustrations, and characters who come to life. Each page is enjoyable as it describes the importance of friendship with honesty, and strong emotions. A refreshing, fun read that makes the reader crave for more. Tune into the adventures of Grace as she lights up each page with her decision-making and comic touch. You won't be disappointed!
