Conceived as an "online miniseries event" during the 2008 writers' strike, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is a 42-minute musical romp that bears the distinctive stamp of Joss Whedon. Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) plays the title character, who video-blogs about his twin goals to join the Evil League of Evil and to woo the fair Penny (Felicia Day, of Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the Web series The Guild), a woman he met at the local laundromat. Dr. Horrible is foiled on both fronts, however, by his arch-nemesis, the self-absorbed superhero Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion, Whedon's Firefly).
Dr. Horrible was written by Whedon, his brothers Zack and Jed, and Jed's fiancee Maurissa Tancharoen, and the songs were written by Joss and Jed (who also produced, orchestrated, played, etc.) with some lyrics by Tancharoen. (Jed and Tancharoen have backup singing roles.) The offbeat, off-the-cuff humor is laugh-out-loud funny, and just like Dr. Horrible wants to take over the world, the songs will take over your head: they're engaging ("My Freeze Ray"), stirring ("My Eyes"), and sweet ("Penny's Song"). "So They Say" is particularly evocative of Jonathan Larson's Rent, but as with Joss Whedon's musical episode of Buffy, "Once More with Feeling," the influences are diverse. It's hard to imagine a better cast. Harris, who's sung Sondheim on Broadway, is a great lead and clearly the best singer, Day is completely charming, and who better than Captain Tightpants to play the pompous superhero? One could argue about the ending, and the independent budget shows, but Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is a complete hoot for people who enjoy musicals with quirky humor. Even if you've already watched or downloaded Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, a number of bonus features might entice you. There are two commentary tracks: Harris, the three Whedons, Tancharoen, Day, and Fillion recorded a spirited track discussing the movie, and there's also "Commentary! The Musical" in which they ignore the movie and sing about the writers' strike and each other (e.g., Fillion sings "I'm Better than Neil")--the songs aren't as good as the Horrible songs, but it's good silly fun. A 20-minute making-of discusses the cast, the recording sessions, and how the movie became a phenomenon, and 10 videos (a half-hour total) were recorded by fans who want to join the Evil League of Evil. And when's the last time you wanted to pause the FBI warning? --David Horiuchi

Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) stars as Billy, A.K.A. Dr. Horrible, a budding super-villain whose plans for world domination continually go awry. His two goals: getting accepted into the Evil League of Evil, and working up the guts to speak to his laundromat crush Penny, played by Felicia Day (The Guild). The only thing standing in his way is Captain Hammer, Billy's superhero arch-nemesis played by Nathan Fillion (Firefly). With one big score, Billy could get into the E.L.E. and earn the respect of Penny, but only if he can keep her away from the dashing Captain Hammer...

This is must own for any Joss Whedon fan. If you liked the Buffy musical episode, this "movie" is right up there with the musical quality and story telling. Dr. Horrible (aka billy buddy) is a man on a quest to enter the Evil League of Evil. When his application goes under review for entry, he is tasked with pulling off something truly evil in order to get accepted. The viewer is taken along on a wonderfully scripted and performed ride that ends in typical Whedon fashion. Neil Patrick Harris plays the part of Dr. Horrible with much flair and style while maintaining a level of b-movie character design throughout. The most surprising thing is how talented he is, I mean honestly, did anyone think he could sing so well? Nathan Fillion, probably best know as the Captain Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly and the movie Serenity, plays Dr. Horrible's nemesis Captain Hammer. Felicia Day plays Dr. Horrible's love interest, even if he can't bring himself to let her know this. I just want to add that I, like many people found my intial order cancelled, but I didn't let that stop me. I simply ordered it from amazon.com, paid a little more and got my purchase before amazon.ca had it in stock. It was worth every penny. I highly recommend this movie.

This DVD is like hitting "WIN!" on the slot machine twice in a row. Containing both the original "movie" and the audio "Commentary The Musical", you'll be able to enjoy twice as many beautiful songs, witty dialog and general greatness.
The DVD also features video footage of people applying to the Evil League of Evil's online contest (some dull, some funny), making-of featurettes and a non-musical audio commentary. The only thing lacking in this product is a gag reel, which I suppose was either non-existant or overlooked. I'm extremely pleased with this DVD and would recommend it to anyone who likes musicals and/or comedy.

It's A Brand New Day... For Musicals,

By now most people know of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, something that was born out of the writers strike and become one of the greatest surprises of 2008. In fact I would go so far as to say this is one of the best movies I've seen in the past year. The cast is wonderful, Neil Patrick Harris as the wannabe supervillian Dr. Horrible (aka Billy), Felicia Day as the sweet Penny, and Nathan Fillion as the arrogant but hilarious Captain Hammer. I was never really a big fan of Joss Whedon's before this, I'd only seen a few episodes of Buffy (and not even 'Once More With Feeling' the musical one). But within two minutes I was completely engrossed in Dr. Horrible's quest to get accepted in the Evil League and win the heart of Penny. I believe some of the best ideas are the simplest, and this concept is so simple, it seems a bit strange it took so long for someone to come up with it (but thankfully someone did). A comicbook type story where we root for the bad guy, who's simple and actually sweet (for the most part) and laugh at the hero for his arrogant stupidity and ego complex. And not only this, but it's a musical....and a good one The songs very from fun and upbeat like 'My Freeze Ray' to the sombre and moving 'Everything You Ever.' The whole cast sings wonderfully, Neil Patrick Harris I'd heard before on a recording of Sweeney Todd was amazing, Felicia Day has a lovely a sweet voice and Nathan Fillion sang with the perfect strong arrogance that Captain Hammer would have. This concept of an internet musical is certainly a very interesting one, and this is the first successful one (that I'm aware of). Of course I'd hate to see the musicals of the stage eliminated, but I don't think that will happen. If anything Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog has opened up more people to the musicl genre, which I think is always a good thing. It's nice to see a musical that can be done outside the box.
But why should you own this dvd, when you can watch Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog for free of hulu.com? Well first is the entertaining video applications to the Evil League Of Evil (sent by real fans of the show). The second and one of the greatest ideas ever is 'Commentary! The Musical' an all singing commentary track. In fact one of the greatest ironies is the fact Commentary has more music in it than the original show. The cast (including those who didn't get to sing in the show) and crew all sing-along in this wonderful bonus feature. In fact the songs from Commentary are just as wonderul as the songs from Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. It's my hope they'll soon release the Commentary soundtrack on it's own. The dvd is well worth the money and it's my hope that this isn't the last of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.
