Prepare to be amazed once again.

Did you know what when you shake a ketchup bottle you're practicing thixotropy? That the ancient Greeks made themselves look less ancient by inventing moisturizer? That the mysterious drug obecalp* is as effective as homeopathy and many herbal cures? From the bestselling author of An Apple a Day, Brain Fuel, and Science, Sense and Nonsense comes a fresh batch of inquiries into the science of everyday life. Dr. Joe, as he is affectionately known to millions of readers, listeners, viewers, and students, presents his third book in the Doubleday Canada series he launched with Brain Fuel.

Using a Q&A format, it explains the world through science, and science through our common experience. There are sections on diet and nutrition, new drugs, and the dubious claims made for alternative remedies and beauty potions. There is a profusion of inspiring, enlightening, sometime just downright bizarre information drawn from the laboratory, from history, from our medicine cabinets and the bottles under our sinks. Science is everywhere, and Dr. Joe is keeping track - and doing it in a marvelously warm, eminently readable style. Let the brain sparks fly!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr. Joe's Brain Sparks Feb. 1 2011
By Nat V
Format:Paperback
This is one of the most captivating and inspiring books I have ever read. The subjects are really amazing and they really do answer some questions that you yourself may have asked at some point.
Curious questions, odd questions, interesting and unusual questions. You are sure to find many topics that will amaze and enlighten you.
Make sure to have a pen and paper ready to take notes. I take the time to do this because I find so many interesting questions, topics and facts in this book. I jot some notes down and then when I talk to friends or family I tell them some amazing facts.
Each chapter is short and to the point. It is very well written, easy to read and easy to understand. I highly recommend this book to everyone.
Dr. Joe has a great story to tell as to how he came about choosing his career path.
If you are not sure about the path you may want to choose in your life, who knows, this book might help you to find that path.
"Dr. Joe's Brain Sparks" is a book that will appeal to the inquiring mind as well as the curious and even the artistic mind.
This is the type of book that will feed the mind that starves for information.
Just have fun. Learning is always fun. When you read this book you will develop a new way of looking at many things in your own life as well as in your every day surroundings.
So sit back, open the book and enjoy!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Spark your interest in science Nov. 10 2010
By North - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Dr Joe Schwarcz, once again, seeks to educate and spark, in all of us, a life-long interest in science and in particular, in his own field, chemistry.
It all starts with a question. What, how, why ? And the results are advances in science who propel our society to a better standart of living. And like in the lab, each question is the starting point to some new and exiting discovery, ranging from beauty products to what we drink, to cars, to forensic science.
Through the wide-ranging subjects raised by Dr. Schwarcz, we learn what we owe to the scientits whose curiosity, creativity and sheer luck (or so it seems sometimes) have given us, among many others every day miracles : cheaper and better cloths, medecine, soap and salt that does not cake with humidity.
Each section is short enough to keep the interest of young readers and is written in understandable language.

What I love about Dr Joe is the fact that you don't have to be a Chemist (or Scientist for that matter), to really understand what he is talking about.
I had him as a professor in University and he is just as animated in his writing, as he is in person!
Great read!
