The Dragon Box is definitely the best DVD release Funimation Entertainment has ever given for Dragon Ball Z.
Many fans were disappointed with the remastered season sets for several reasons. The original picture (4:3 full screen) was cropped to wide screen (16:9 wide screen) and because the picture was remastered by a machine some of the side effects were some blurry lines which can be a little distracting.
Although Funimation is a good company their job is dubbing and translating anime, not actually fixing it.
Toei Animation with Pony Crayon fully restored all episodes of the Dragon Ball Z anime from the original 16mm film reels, effectively cleaning the film, frame by frame, of all dirt and scratches and most of the grain. The frame alignment has also been fixed, removing cases of jitter. All done by people!
For this release Funimation hasn't changed the picture or sound at all. Toei Animation and Pony Crayon improved the picture and sound themselves.
The default audio track is the Japanese version with English Subtitles.
A secondary audio track is the English Funimation dub with the original Japanese background music in 5.1 sound. The Ocean Group English dub is not included.
Unfortunately the English dub track with the American background music scored by Bruce Faulconer will not be included for these releases. Nathan Johnson's music score for the first 67 episodes of Funimation's English dub is not included either.
It is assumed this was to prevent loss of video quality.
The original opening and ending credits which were absent from the remastered season sets have been added to all episodes. The opening theme song is "HA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA" and the ending is "Detekoi Tobikiri Zenkai Pawa!".
The episode previews are also available on DVD for the first time but only for the Japanese track which are subtitled in English. The episode previews are not included at all on the English dub track.
One of the minor differences between the remastered season sets and the Dragon Box is that there is no marathon feature for the Dragon Box.
The marathon feature on the remastered seasons sets gave viewers the option to watch all episodes without the opening credits, previous episode recap and ending credits (thus saving time). For the Dragon Box you can still skip the opening and ending credits by skipping them with your remote control, but you can't skip the episode recap (if you do you'll miss part of the episode) so you'll have to fast forward instead.
The menu set up is simple.
-Play All -Episode Selection -Set Up
Play All gives you the option to watch all episodes on the disc continuously.
Episode Selection gives you the option to see the 7 episodes available on the disc and select the one you want.
Set up as I mentioned before gives you the option to choose between the Japanese or English dub audio and the option of English subtitles.
A Dragon Book is also included with this set. 48 pages of character profiles, episode summaries, and lots of other cool Dragon Ball Z information.
The packing is very nice and offers great protection for your DVDs. Only small flaw is that some of the discs overlap.
The discs also have fancy artwork of Goku on disc 1, Piccolo on disc 2, Gohan on disc 3, King Kai on disc 4, Nappa on disc 5 and Vegeta on disc 6.
Dragon Ball Z Dragon Box volume 1 has 42 episodes on 6 discs. All episodes are uncut and unedited. So if you've only seen the edited Dragon Ball Z episodes on youtube or on TV, this is your chance to see the series with all the blood, bad language and nudity!
I'm a dub fan and Dragon Ball Z's English dub voice cast by FUNimation is definitely one of the best and most likable in my opinion.
The episodes are spread out like so:

Overall this is a great DVD release. It may not have the superior U.S. Background Music (IMO) or episode previews included for the English dub track but it is still the best release ever for the Dragon Ball Z anime. Well done Funimation! This DVD set is definitely worth the price.
This DVD really met up to it's expectations. It's amazing, and it truly was develop right for DragonBall Z, and I'm hoping to finally get all of the DragonBox Sets because I am enjoying each, and every one of them.
