Innovative Team-Based AI Gameplay

Dragon's Dogma introduces an innovative team system to the genre. The player's three AI partners, known as "Pawns" fight independently, demonstrating prowess and ability they have developed based on traits learned over time from the player and their actions. Utilizing Xbox LIVE, players will journey to the Rift where they can share their own Pawns with friends and be rewarded with treasure, knowledge of the world and strategies for taking down enemies. Conversely, players can borrow friends' Pawns with the specific skills or experience required to tackle a particular quest. In addition, Dragon's Dogma will ship with thousands of ready-made Pawns for players to select offline.

Key Game Features

  • Highly Stylized Action Combat - The creators of this game were responsible for the action hits - Resident Evil 4 and Devil May Cry 4.
  • Fight With Ability - The soul of combat comes down to how the game is played, where you strike the enemy, and how you react to their attacks.
  • Pawn Them All - The Pawn system offers flexible combat assistance with a main pawn companion that you can train throughout the game and two secondary Pawns that can vary wildly to fit your combat style.
  • Help Your Friends, Help Yourself - To enhance your battle experience, share your main Pawn with friends and others via Xbox LIVE. Ultimately what we're all looking for in an RPG is to be addicted to something. Dragons Dogma is ADDICTIVE.

The goods:

Best combat in any RPG I have played.
Very good character development.
Engrossing, beautiful, inviting, and dangerous world to explore.
The feeling of being stranded in the wilderness as the night falls and realizing you will have to battle for your life to get back to town (this is a constant worry for the first 30 levels or so and is awesome for immersion).
Great graphics.

The bads:

The storyline is laughably bad. They must have tacked it on as an afterthought. NPCs have no background whatsoever and they are essentially meaningless.
Again, I cannot stress how badly put together the story is. Each event has little to no foreshadowing and no context to give it any meaning.

Overall:

This game just ate about 60 hours of my life. The exploration, combat, and character development were literally good enough to make up for the shortcomings of the story. Had this game had a good story it would be a 10/10 in my books.

This game is sweet, I enjoy current-retro fantasy and this hits the spot, delivered in wonderful condition! Game play is a matter of what a person enjoys, the art for the price is fabulous ;)

Dragon's Dogma, a game that takes on that RPG Dragon titled game, is a very pleasant surprise to the RPG hungry crowd possibly off Skyrim or even Kingdoms of Amalur. Dragon's Dogma's big claim is a tough game with good action mechanics, but a story that falls flat, however makes up with it with some good quests, some fun and predictable fetch quests or kill 'x' amount of this animal to gain large amounts of experience and cash. From the outset the game starts very well, from the must play tutorial where you learn the basic mechanics of combat and the benefits of the pawns, to the opening sequence where your strange looking human gets his/her heart ripped out by a dragon that did that old dragon speak right before doing it, thus involking the sacred magic of dragon babble that is so ancient that a heart can be taken and eaten and the person could still live. Kinda cheesey but still a good start to the premise. But almost immediately after that the main story hushes a little bit as you leave the starting village for the encampment just down the road to eventually fight a hydra.

Usually, I'd hate this kind of bad story-telling, but the combat is so engrossing and involving, at any time if your character is not upgraded or if you don't have the right mix of pawns, any given battle you can be easily swarmed, or over matched, or eveningly matched where you just pull one out. The game can be difficult if you play it from the wrong angle, but if you go in there actively upgrading your character and equipment, and keeping your pawns up to your level as well as a good amount of curatives which can be purchased or found the game eases a little, and not only can you and your character take down the massive beasts with the right game plan you can do it all easily.
