Product Description

This book taps into the dragon craze ignited by the successful "Eragon" series and includes all types of dragons, from scaly brutes of medieval Europe to graceful Asian fantasy figures. Clear, illustrated and step-by-step enough that a child can follow it, but detailed, imaginative and insightful enough that an adult can learn from it as well, this book offers anyone and everyone a simple way to learn how to draw dragons.T-Rex may be king of the dinosaurs and the lion may be king of the jungle, but the undisputed, hands-down ruler of mythical creatures is the dragon. Now, anyone with an interest in drawing these amazing creatures can follow the program in this book and learn to do it. Avoiding the 'copy-it-yourself' approach found in other books, Sandra Staple teaches readers all the skills they need to create their own dragon menagerie. Every step is presented with ease and clarity, taking the bewilderment out of the drawing process and showing that great complexity begins with utmost simplicity. For beginners, there's a special primer section, while more experienced artists can dive right in to drawing the mythical creatures that fill their imaginations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Learning Tool!!!, Dec 2 2009
This review is from: Drawing Dragons: Learn How to Create Fantastic Fire-Breathing Dragons (Paperback)
I bought this book for my 10 year old daughter. She is a butting artist and loves to draw. I checked out a lot of other dragon drawing books but they don't teach or give you as much information on how to create with your own imagination like this one does. It is truly a great book to have.

5.0 out of 5 stars An achievement I can say I am truly proud of!, July 7 2008

I am the author of this book so obviously I am going to be biased that this is simply the BEST dragon drawing book on the market...but putting that aside, here is some useful information about this book.

1. It is 150 black and white pages, but it does include a 16 page colour insert of full page illustrations.

3. I drew the entire book in pencil. Unlike drawing books that claim "all you need is a paper and pencil" but then the artwork is all done in computer programs like Adobe Photoshop, this book is truly drawn all in pencil! Not that I have anything against digital medium mind you, but if you want to learn how to draw and SHADE dragons using more traditional- and less expensive- mediums, than "photo shopped" artwork isn't going to teach you what you need to know. So this book is all done in graphite pencil. The colour insert is also done using coloured pencil.

4. The style I draw in could be called "fantastic realism" in that, unlike many other fantasy/dragon drawing books out there, my artwork is not all cartoony or comic bookish. I try to draw most of my dragons realistic looking.

5. I get many emails from people asking me how to shade, and I find shading is one important aspect of drawing that most fantasy/dragon drawing books lack! So for each drawing tutorial I have included steps on how to shade each dragon.

6. This entire book is all about drawing dragons. There is no big filler section in the back covering all kinds of unrelated creatures or characters, or full page spreads filled with loosely drawn sketches with zero detail. I do have some great sections on drawing all different types of scales, ridges, horns, and more, so if you do pick up the book I hope you enjoy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great drawing book, Jun 9 2009
By Dawn Kravagna "Cattle Capers(tm) Author" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Drawing Dragons: Learn How to Create Fantastic Fire-Breathing Dragons (Paperback)
This is a great book on drawing dragons. But drawing only: If you're looking for painting or coloring tips, I would supplement this with another book. But at the price Amazon is selling it at, it's a great bargain! I cannot think of a book that could be more thorough for an introduction to drawing this mythical creature. Ms. Staple firstly introduces some pencil techniques then breaks the dragon form down into basic components: head views, body parts and then types of dragons from different views. She then shows the dragon in varying genders, ages, and poses. Most of the book is in black-and-white, as it's a basic pencil drawing book, but there are 16 pages in color in the center of the book of dragons in several colors and poses to demonstrate where you can further take your artwork. This is not for the advanced artist who is looking to further their dragon fantasy drawing skills, but for someone who needs a good solid foundation from which to develop their own unique creations. She makes it look easy. I'm glad I bought it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!, Aug 3 2008

This book is amazing. Not only does this book teach you how to draw a dragon, but it teaches you how to bring your dragon to life using different postures, expressions, and personalizing features. The author does a great job at breaking the complexity of dragons into simple starting patterns and pieces, then shows you how to add detail and personality to achieve the final effect.
