Product Description

"Drawing from Within" is an introductory guide for those wanting to explore the use of art with clients with eating disorders. Art therapy is a particularly effective therapeutic intervention for this group, as it allows them to express uncomfortable thoughts and feelings through artistic media rather than having to explain them verbally. Lisa D. Hinz outlines the areas around which the therapist can design effective treatment programmes, covering family influences, body image, self-acceptance, problem solving and spirituality. Each area is discussed in a separate chapter and is accompanied by suggestions for exercises, with advice on materials to use and how to implement them. Case examples show how a therapy programme can be tailored to the individual client and photographs of client artwork illustrate the text throughout. Practical and accessible to practitioners at all levels of experience, this book gives new hope to therapists and other mental health professionals who want to explore the potential of using art with clients with eating disorders.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent exercise based book, Oct 17 2011

Tom Turvey "Priscilla T" (Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Drawing From Within (Paperback)
This book was an excellent read. Ms. Hinz put a lot of good research into this book. It was aimed at professionals, but it had several chapters of art exercises and questions and things to analyze your work, or that of your patient. It also helped set the scene and encourage creative displays of hard to pinpoint and describe feelings from a patient perspective.

I plan to get a copy of this book in the future so I can do the exercises on my own and perhaps with a therapist. I will be suggesting professionals and patients I am friends and acquaintances with, take some time and read through this book and do the exercises. Having done a lot of art therapy work, the amazing ability to showcase powerful emotions when words are elusive is special. Clients find the emotions hard to handle, hence in this case people with eating disorder issues are in pain and need various forms to relay their pain and express their emotions.

I enjoyed the creative and interesting way that Ms. Hinz put the book together and reached out to readers from all walks of life and knowledge levels. It was easy to comprehend and a quick read.

The only thing I didn't enjoy was there was a lot of information that was repeated in different areas and ways. I don't care for repetitive writing styles. The wordiness wasn't a huge issue, but I did note it and was a little frustrated.

I rate this book with a 4/5, with my likes and dislikes in mind.

4.0 out of 5 stars structure the freedom!, Jan 25 2008
By Elli Tholouli - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Drawing From Within (Paperback)
this is a very thoughtfully organised and informative book. It covers important topics of the eating disorders in an developmental way: the past, present and future of the patient's history, as well as the developing stages of the therapy. It offers an introduction to each theme and suggests art directives (about 60 in total) as well as discusses possible themes that might appear in therapy. There is a clear emphasis on a specific structure- throughout the book chapters- which is also suggested in the process of therapy. I was a bit uncomfortable with the suggestion of using merely size A3 sheets of paper as it is not explained whether there is a reason to give specific size boundaries for the specific patients (apart from making a nice portfolio of the work at the end of therapy). The 28 figures in the book are very informative.I wish there were a few more. The bibliography is excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's the hands-on application of theory to results which makes DRAWING FROM WITHIN so essential, April 9 2007
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Drawing From Within (Paperback)
Drawing from Within: Using Art to Treat Eating Disorders is a fine reference for practitioner who wish to explore the therapeutic use of art with clients with eating disorders. Art therapy has been successfully used as intervention with this client group: chapters cover themes which can embrace programs, offering suggestions for creating and implementing exercises and translating results to therapy. It's the hands-on application of theory to results which makes DRAWING FROM WITHIN so essential for any working with clients with eating disorders - and for college-level libraries strong in psychology.

Dr. Hinz does an amazing job of conceptualizing and describing the challenges faced by people with eating disorders. I have never read a book that captures this information so comprehensively. The highlight of this book is the practical applications that she includes, and what to expect to come up for clients. The majority of this book is interventions, and how to implement the interventions wiht clients. A must read book for all clinicians.
