Book Description

Millions of people have learned to draw using the methods of Dr. Betty Edwards. Now, in an essential companion to her bestselling classic, Edwards offers readers the key to mastering this art form: guided practice in their newfound creative abilities.

Here are forty new exercises that cover each of the five basic skills of drawing. Each practice session includes a brief explanation and instructional drawings, suggestions for materials, sample drawings, and blank pages for the reader's own drawings. Also provided in this spiral-bound workbook is a pullout viewfinder, a crucial tool for effective practice. While The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain focused primarily on portrait drawing with pencil, this workbook gives readers experience in various subject matter-still life, landscape, imaginative drawing-using alternative mediums such as pen and ink, charcoal, and conté crayon.

For all those who are taking a drawing class, who have already received instruction through a book or course, or who prefer to learn by doing, this volume of carefully structured "homework" offers the perfect opportunity to reinforce and improve their skills and expand their repertoire.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing, Nov 1 2002

This review is from: New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain Workbook (Spiral-bound)
I loved the video "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" and also the book "The New Drawing on the right Side of the Brain",but this new book is just a new format for the exercises covered in the book and video. There are not 40 new exercises as promised, and actually there are very few new exercises.
I was looking forward to the book to further the skills I developed with new ideas not to redo the exercises I've completed.
It's a great book for someone who never invested time or money in Betty Edwards' book or video, but it's not worth it if you have.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine workbook - worth the price!, Jun 28 2003

This review is from: New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain Workbook (Spiral-bound)
This isn't meant to replace Edwards' outstanding books, including the classic Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. But it is helpful with its exercises, drawing tool, and current research. Don't expect miracles, but do expect improvement in your drawing skills! ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Drawing what you see, not what you know, Jun 19 2009
By
London born (now in Toronto) - See all my reviews
This review is from: New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain Workbook (Spiral-bound)
This book begins on an encouraging note, with student drawings before and after instruction. The emphasis is on portraits, with a series of exercises that force the reader to see things as lines and shapes, with meanings stripped away. Drawing pictures upside down is one technique that works. I was amazed to find I had drawn a good copy of a Degas drawing. There are copious illustrations, and step by step instructions to make tools to aid the drawing process. I found that I did indeed lose myself in drawing, finding a patience with details, the mark of using the right side of the brain, according to Betty Edwards. Estimates of the time needed to complete each lesson were accurate. I find my self recommending this book to anyone who says they can't draw. Before reading this book I could not, but it must be stressed that you have to follow the directions to the letter. I treated it like a "real" class, seeting aside the time to work my way through.
