Love Slave,

This review is from: I Dream of Jeannie: The Complete Fifth Season (DVD)
During the '60s, television entertained us with the silliest sitcoms, lacking any socially redeeming value whatsoever. The week began with Goldie in LAUGH-IN, followed by Barabara Eden's I DREAM OF JEANNIE, Elizabeth Montgomery in BEWITCHED, Eva Gabor in GREEN ACRES, and bodacious Barbara Feldon in GET SMART, closing with F TROOP on Saturday night. I don't know why anybody else looked at these fluffs; Monday through Friday, I was in love with the leading ladies. None were so vivacious, bubbly, captivating, and sexy as JEANNIE.Astronaut Major Tony Nelson crash lands on a desert island to find a bottle holding a genie captive for millenia. Once released, she falls in love with her "Master", eager to grant his every wish by crossing her arms and blinking. JEANNIE is everyman's fantasy of a magical love slave. Seriously challenged for androgens, the Major, (Mary Martin's son Larry Hagman who went on to greater stardom in DALLAS) doesn't want a voluptuous love slave or a gift nightmare. And so the show proceeded for 5 years, with JEANNIE screwing up Nelson's life with her unwanted and malaprop miracles that keep Colonel Bellows, played by Hayden Roarke, continually befuddled; "I saw it with my own eyes." Until Jeannie finally marries her Master in the last season. A vacuous treat for people who dream of fairy-tale nonsense. Or dream of Barbara Eden. Ms. Eden's (nee Huffman) considerable thespian talents, drive for stardom, and enchanting mezzo soprano voice failed to raise her above pretty girl bit parts in frothy comedies. After her breakout role as JEANNIE, she made another hit as the irrepressible housewife in THE HARPER VALLEY PTA, followed by singing gigs in Las Vegas. Shaken by the tragedy of her son ODing on recreational drugs, and still a beauty in the face of 60 years, she tried a come that never made it back, as a psychic sleuth on a TV series that died in its first season. Most stories need a half-dozen main roles for character interest; count 'em in MASH, CHEERS, and STAR TREK. The silly sitcoms lug on 3 or 4 stock roles. Their humour is beaten out of the lies the protagonists tell to avoid embarrassing truths, and the penalties for prevaricating, a redeeming social value never noticed.

Yay! Season 5,

I can't wait for the fifth and final season of Jeannie! This was actually my favorite. It had the Bellows more involved in the stories. I found Dr. Bellows and his wife to be hilarious! Great episodes involving appearing and disappearing floors in hotels, the Bellow's nephew stealing Jeannie's bottle with her in it, the house getting redecorated (very cool I might add), old wine making the Bellows invisible and the final episode where Dr. Bellows finally finds out the truth about Jeannie (even if it was a dream it was still cool). This will also complete the entire series and collection for us Jeannie fans! I've waited decades to have this series so it will be good to get this last set. Thank you Sony Entertainment and Amazon!

Many people have criticized the last season of Jeannie as being the worst and that marrying Tony and Jeannie "killed" the show. It might not have been the best idea to marry them since it was the constant pursuit of Tony by Jeannie that so much of the series was based on. On the other hand, how long could you go on with her pursuing him before that alone would have become worn out? In the end, I don't think tony and Jeannie getting married is why this was the last season. This season does have some good episodes on it. My favorite one being the episode with the designer Mr. Halasko who is hired by the Bellows to redecorate the Nelson residence. There are a few other good episodes but one thing that is sad is the lack of episodes with Jeannie's sister. This season only has one episode with the sister and its not my favorite one, either. In the end, I don't think there was a "bad" season of this show, but maybe the 5th season is my least favorite because it was the end. No matter what, if you collect the series, you must have this season, too.One thing I like in this season is the way they do Barbara Eden's hair. It's gorgeous! And so are many of her fabulous outfits. This season would have been 1969 - 1970. Great MOD era styles! 8 of 8 people found the following review helpful

Most folk's buying this show already know what it's about...This review is of the release it's self. The complete and final 24 show's for the fith and final season are packged here. The set comes in two slim cases with two single sided disc's in each case, each case has a mini summary of each episode on the back . The "extra's", arn't much , included are a Fantasy Island ( Rouges and Riches)episode and a Bewitched (Junior Executive )episode, I would much rather have had the bonsus's been about the show(as all the main cast -Hayden Rourke are still living). Personally I really enjoyed watching these episodes, even though it was the last season the show still had plenty of "steam" for a few more seasons. Too bad non of the tv movies were included . The show can be heard in-Englih, Spanish,Portugese. Subtitles- Spanish and Portuges(English subtitles, you ask ? Nope...I though that was odd. If you have season's 1-4 , season 5 should complete your "wish" to own this great show . |
