This is a very good, full translation of Ts'ao Hseuh-Chin's novel. The translator has done a very good job to explain the jokes that are lost in translation.As far as the book itself is concerned, it is the pinnacle of Chinese fiction. The story focuses on a very prosperous extended household with the imperial favour as they suffer through a decline. The 3 volumes and 120 chapters span about 15 years and there are dozens of unique characters. The best thing about this novel is that each and every character is fully-developed with their own thought process and ambitions and there are no characters that are only stereotypes.
The book indirectly reveals a lot about the culture of the time, such as the family hierarchy and the rules of etiquette.
