Product Description

From Amazon.com

Like many progressive-rock groups from King Crimson, Pink Floyd, and Yes to Genesis, Rush, and Queensryche, Dream Theater has followed its own musical and artistic agenda, trends and hipness be damned. That single-mindedness is borne out on Metropolis 2000: Scenes from New York, a full-length concert video shot at Roseland Ballroom in New York City in August 2000; it was the final show on the group's tour supporting its release Scenes from a Memory. With its intricate rhythms and complex song structures, Dream Theater's music is serious and somber to a fault; when gospel singer Theresa Thomason and a backing chorus are brought on for a few numbers, the effect is strangely soothing, as if a layer of humanity smothers the impeccable craftsmanship. The video is decked out in visuals of a mostly silly sort, often literally spelling out the album's narrative (or what passes for it), including reenactments and a portentous narrator. It's all cleverly put together (drummer Mike Portnoy gets director credit), and Kevin Shirley's audio mixing presents the music with clarity and undeniable power. Fans of Dream Theater won't need to be told to snap this up; those unconvinced, however, are not likely to become converts. --Kevin Filipski

Product Description

Dream Theater's 1999 album Scenes from a Memory was one of their most ambitious efforts to date, a sprawling concept album about a man who is haunted by the spirit of a woman who was murdered 70 years ago. For their 2000 world tour, Dream Theater played t

3.0 out of 5 stars Video Quality Substandard, And It's A Shame!!!, Feb 15 2004

I love Dream Theater but this DVD is a huge letdown visually! This is a taped performance not filmed. Plus the video effects are laughable at best. I mean these are cheesy basic video editing machine tricks(mirror image, hippie like tye dye backgrounds and the like). Musically, Dream Theater are amazing, but this DVD just fails to visually deliver the power of their music and instead makes it feel cheesy which is a damn shame! Next time guys, release a DVD that is visually on on par as your studio albums are sonically

4.0 out of 5 stars Masters of Progressive Metal, May 2 2001
Dream Theater are an awesome group of musicians. The sustaining energy through their performances is incredible! I happened to be fortunate to have seen this concert from about 35 feet, dead center of the stage. At first I was surprised to realize that they were going to play "Metropolis" from start to finish, and that they did. Boy, did they! As a fan since "Images and Words" I am thankful that someone picked up where the original progressive rockers like Yes, ELP, Rush, Kansas, etc. left off - and added a little testerone! Watching these guys play is quite an experience. Having the video to get a close-up look at their muscianship is a special treat. As the music flowed from one track to the next, I was captivated by the performance. However, there are a bit too many visual effects in the video where there may have been a better opportunity to feature the band, especially during a few "solo" interludes. Sorry Mike. Even so, after watching the video twice in three days, I must say that this a keeper! I can only imagine the DVD! The major drawback of the VHS is that the rest of the show is absent. I don't know if it's on the DVD, but it's a shame that people can't see the balance of this amazing performance. To see these guys just keep playing song after song for 4 hours was a sight to be seen. Fortunately, I did, and reside myself to have been enriched by this event, however hot, smokey and smelly the club was. I anxiously await their next offering.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great.....But, Aug 27 2004

Like other reviews here, I had to take away a star for the cheesy effects. The musicianship and sound quality is great though. I hope they haven't made the same mistake with their forthcoming DVD.
