Touched by the Angels,
By
This review is from: Dream With Me (Audio CD)
Jackie Evancho is indeed touched by the angels. At the tender age of eleven, her singing voice is that of a mature soprano. Her voice is rich, developed, and well rounded; her delivery is strong and seamless with lovely phrasing. Like the Scottish singer Susan Boyle, she became famous in a TV talent show, American Got Talent. But, unlike Susan Boyle, who languished in obscurity for decades, Jackie Evancho was discovered at the very young age of eight in a local talent contest, the 2008 Kean Idol, in which she was the first runner-up. In this respect, she, and her fans, are singularly fortunate. In this debut album Dream with Me, produced by the awarding-winning producer David Foster under the Syco/Columbia label, Jackie Evancho sings well known arias and crossover pops, as well as two new songs - Dream with Me and To Believe, written by Jackie herself and her uncle Matt Evancho respectively. Of the fourteen tracks, other than the new songs, the most notable ones are the motion picture title song Lovers, originally performed by the American soprano Kathleen Battle, and the two duets with Susan Boyle and Barbra Streisand respectively. Opera lovers will love Jackie's flawless renditions of O Mio Babbino Caro and Nessun Dorma. The following is a brief description of the tracks in the Dream with Me album by Jackie Evancho: "When You Wish upon a Star" is a song in the 1940 Disney animated classic Pinocchio, originally sung by Cliff Edwards in the character of Jiminy Cricket. It has since become the theme song of the Disney Company. In Japan and Scandinavia, this song is a regular Christmas favorite. "Nella Fantasia (In my Fantasy)" was first recorded by the British classical crossover diva Sarah Brightman in her 1998 album Eden. The music was composed by the famous Italian composer Ennio Morricone for the 1986 film The Mission, and the Italian lyrics were written by Chiara Ferraù. Rumor has it that the lyrics were originally written in English by Sarah herself and later translated into Italian by Ferraù. "A Mother's Prayer (Duet with Susan Boyle)" was originally named The Prayer, a duet between Céline Dion and Andrea Bocelli. The song was released in a single on March 1, 1999. A solo version by Céline Dion was released in her 2004 album Miracle as A Mother's Prayer. "Nessun Dorma (None shall sleep)" is an aria from the opera Turandot by Giacomo Puccini (1858 - 1924), sung by the character Calaf in the moonlit palace garden, while awaiting his possible beheading by the beautiful but cold and heartless Princess Turandot at dawn, when he intends to confess to her his name. This aria was popularized by the famous Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti. "Angel" is a song by Canadian songer/songwriter Sarah McLachlan from her 1997 album Surfacing, which won two Grammy Awards. According to Sarah, the song is about keyboard player Jonathan Melvoin of the band Smashing Pumpkins, who overdosed on heroin and died in 1996. In 2006, Sarah MacLachlan, a passionate animal lover, made a two-minute advertisement for ASPCA based on Angel. It subsequently raised more than $30 million for the organization. "O Mio Babbino Caro (Oh My Dear Papa)" is an aria from the comic opera Gianni Schicchi (1918) by Puccini, sung by the female character Lauretta, when her father Schicchi threatens to separate her from Rinuccio, the boy she loves, during a dispute with her prospective in-laws in a plot to forge a will to steal a dead man's fortune. This song was a favorite pick among classical crossover sopranos like Sarah Brightman and teenage Charlotte Church. "Somewhere (Duet with Barbra Streisand)" is a song from the 1957 Broadway musical West Side Story, sung by Reri Grist in the character Consuelo. The music was composed by Leonard Bernstein with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Barbra Streisand covered this song in her 1985 The Broadway Album. "All I Ask of You" is a song from the musical The Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber. It is a duet between the characters Christine and Raoul when they flee from the Phantom to the roof of the Paris Opera House. A recording of this song was first released as a duet by Sarah Brightman and Cliff Richard in 1986. "Ombra Mai Fu (A shade there never was)" is the opening aria in the 1738 opera Serse by the German born British composer George Frideric Handel. It is sung by the main character Xerxes I of Persia, in praise of the shade provided by a plane tree. "Lovers" is the title song of the awarding wining Chinese martial art/romance film House of Flying Daggers, originally performed by American soprano Kathleen Battle. The music was composed by the Japanese composer Shigeru Umebayashi, who scored numerous films, including the House of Flying Daggers. "Imaginer" is written in French by the Belgium born Canadian singer-sonwriter Lara Fabian specifically for Jackie, based on Fabian's song Broken Vow. "The Lord's Prayer" is a Christian prayer set to music by Albert Hay Malotte in 1935. The song is a favorite among songsters like teenage Charlotte Church and Barbra Streisand. "To Believe" is written by Jackie's uncle Matt Evancho. He is currently pursuing a Ph. D. in music composition. "Dream with Me" is a cooperative effort among Jackie Evancho herself, producer David Foster, and actress/songwriter and Foster's ex-wife Linda Thompson, according to Lisa Evancho.

From the moment the first note is sung by Jackie, you will be in awe. It is a stunning collection of beautiful music. By the time I had listened to the last song on the cd I was in tears. I believe I heard an angel sing.
