Fabulous!, Dec 24 2009
This review is from: Dreamland Chronicles Book One (Paperback)
Reason for Reading: book was nominated for a cybils award. Summary: When Alexander was a little boy he used to dream every night that he was in Dreamland with his friends: Nastajia the elf girl, Kiwi the fairy and Paddington Rumblebottom the third, a rock boy. Ah, the adventures they had but after a particularly frightening episode the dreams stopped until one day in his college dorm Alexander receives a care package from his mom with a necklace of a sword, he mysteriously brought back from Dreamland that fateful night, and when he puts it on his dreams start again and not only he but his friends have grown up and things are not as peaceful in Dreamland anymore. Comment: This is a brilliant graphic novel. Touted as being for all ages, I certainly agree, though not for the very young because of the love story angle. Dreamland Chronicles is a breath of fresh air in the graphic novel format. The plot is exciting, fun, cute and humourous, while this volume lets us get to know all the characters it also sets up the great quest typical of mainstream fantasy tales and ends with a shocker leaving you ready to buy book two. And buy the books I want to indeed! The cgi illustrations are absolutely fabulous. I forgot I was reading at times and felt like I was watching a movie or playing an RPG. I haven't seen anything like it in all the graphic novels I've read this year (which is a LOT). It introduces an exciting new medium to graphic novels and will appeal to the gamers out there who may be otherwise reluctant readers. I will most certainly be continuing on with this series. Up to Book 3 are available with Book 4 coming out in the Spring of 2010. For those who like this sort of thing this is a webcomic that can be found online, Book 1 covers Chapters 1 to 4. While it is tempting for me to continue reading online I much prefer reading from paper pages so will treat myself to the books instead. Simply loads of fun!

Imaginative fantasy for all ages, Jan 15 2007
By Guy L. Gonzalez "Malcontent" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Dreamland Chronicles Book 1 (Perfect Paperback)
The Dreamland Chronicles: Book One is a fun and entertaining all-ages tale that posits the existence of a magical world of fantastic creatures, visited by children in their dreams. Alexander Carter used to visit every night as a child, and upon waking, would tell his twin brother, Dan, of his adventures, who would write them down and eventually be inspired to become a writer. Now college roommates, Alexander returns to Dreamland after nearly eight years of not dreaming, only to discover he is destined to play a part in the upcoming war between Dreamland and the Nightmare Realm. Scott Christian Sava has once again created an excellent cast of characters -- Paddington Rumblebottom III, the adorable dancing rock giant, is my favorite -- and deftly balances the two worlds by crafting a realistic relationship between the two brothers that is equal in dramatic weight to the more fantastic elements of Dreamland. As the story reeled me in, I warmed up to the CGI artwork and was eventually able to appreciate its dexterity, as the impressive team of computer artists Sava assembled not only offer distinctive character designs and settings, but manage to communicate emotion surprisingly well. Sava helps by taking full advantage of his nearly 300 pages, pacing the story in a way that allows it to breathe without feeling decompressed. The extras include a look at some of his original painted pages as well as an assortment of character models and page layouts that give the book the feel of a big-budget CGI movie. Highly recommended for fantasy fans young and old!

This is more than a comic. The characters are three dimensional; we watch them grow up. The art is astounding, and the plot is rich. This is a comic the whole family will love.

This review is from: The Dreamland Chronicles Book 1 (Perfect Paperback)
I have never been a huge fan of comics, but this one has changed my mind. Not only are the characters dynamic and fun, but the graphic quality is amazing. This story is good for young and old, and I can't wait to share it in print with friends. If you love epic stories don't miss out on this one!
