Powerful Performance
The MM40 model of the Multi-Max is equipped with a 2.5-amp motor, making it more powerful than prior models of Dremel’s oscillating tools and immensely improving optimal performance. This Multi-Max can make faster, more precise cuts in a vast range of materials thanks to its variable-speed capability (10,000 to 21,000 oscillations per minute). A separate on/off switch and speed control maintain speed settings for ease of use and consistently ideal speed settings; the soft-start feature diminishes sudden starts and affords users a feeling of control as the tool ramps up to the preferred speed. And the electric feedback system gives users the confidence to power through tough applications.

Versatility
All Dremel oscillating accessories are compatible with the Multi-Max MM40, further expanding the variety of applications it can handily tackle—plus, there are now larger accessories that are built to handle the MM40’s increased performance. The MM40’s superior blades—featuring expanded cutting width and depth that enables users to cut through more material in less time—make precise cuts through sturdy materials such as hardwoods, framing lumber, and two-by-fours. Its pioneering Quick Lock accessory-change system swiftly and securely expedites accessory changes without a hex wrench and removes the need to worry about losing the tool’s screw and washer. That, combined with the Quick Fit interface, means that users can swap accessories twice as fast as with comparable oscillating tool systems—translating to more efficiently completed projects.

Functionality
The Multi-Max MM40 was specially designed with user comfort and functionality in mind. To that end, strategically placed vent locations and a larger fan keep the tool running smoothly and coolly—making use over longer periods of time more comfortable than ever. Its ergonomic design features a narrowed soft-grip zone and a lightweight body (it weighs only 3.2 pounds) that make it a snap to reach into tight work spaces. And the generous seven-foot rubber cord permits users to manage the tool easily while cutting, scraping, sanding, grinding, or otherwise working with the job at hand.

4.0 out of 5 stars solid engineering Dec 14 2012

hefty
apparently durable
appropriately long power cord
fast change tool chuck is strong and quick, I think it will not break easily
comes with a decent number of tools and accessories
speaking of which, this thing is like a computer printer: they more-or-less give you the tool, but they nail you with the outrageously priced consumables. In this case, it is all the little bits and pieces: cut-off saws, scrapers, and sanding pads, etc.
So, be prepared to pay the price of the tool in consumables for the first big job you do...

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect tool for this job! Dec 31 2011
By Markian - Published on Amazon.com
Purchased the Dremel MM40 after spending an hour trying to remove the caulk seal around a sink and had barely gotten anywhere. Tried a variety of blades and knives and made very little progress. The caulk was nearly rock hard. Did a bit of research and found this Dremel tool claimed to remove caulk nicely with its flexible scraping blade. With the Dremel Multi-Max I was able to get around the whole sink caulk seal in about 15 minutes cleanly, safely and quickly; almost like a knife going through butter. We shall see how much I use this tool but just for this it was completely worth it! It was definitely the right tool for the job.

Decided to go with with the more powerful and feature-filled version of the Dremel Multi-Max and was pleased with the features including the built-in blade release lever. I was pleased with all of the features and the motor did fine.

I was so pleased with the Dremel that I decided to provide my first Amazon review!

Update 12-11-13: Have used the Multi-Max for sanding in spots where my random orbital sander would not reach and used it to remove tile grout. Worked great for both applications. 5-star rating stands!

3.0 out of 5 stars Worked great until the blade holder broke. March 17 2012
By Toolman-PA - Published on Amazon.com

This is a real well build tool that works great. After you purchase an oscillating tool you wonder how you survived without one. It gets into places and does cutting/scraping tasks that no other electric tool does. It feels very solid in your hand, has good power, and does not overheat. The quick-change 'no tool' feature is very helpful - you can change blades or blade positions in seconds.

Dremel's literature does not stipulate what type of bearings are in this tool, so I contacted them by email. Their customer support online is great and they quickly replied with 'Ball Bearings'.

Notes:
1) There may be what appear to be small cracks in the grey plastic in some places, like the screw posts. Dremel customer service said these are mold lines from where the plastic is injected. I looked at the lines under magnification and agree with their reply.

2) For such a well made tool I did not expect a case with a flexible plastic hinge. I expected the case to have an actual hinge like other quality tools, but the two halves of theirs are connected via a piece of plastic that bends. My experience with these cheaper cases is that the plastic holding the two halves of the case together can break. This is not what I expected for such a quality tool.

UPDATE 11/2013: I too experienced the problem with the quick-release blade holder breaking. After a year or so of occasional light home use, the quick-release tool holder suddenly would not open enough to allow blade changes. I sent it back to Dremel and they quickly (3-4 days) fixed and returned the tool at no-charge. Of course, I'm out the shipping charges, but they did included a scraper blade in the box for my trouble. I'm disappointed to have experienced what appears to be a known defect with this tool - hopefully they corrected the problem and it will not break again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Little Tool March 31 2012
By David W. Handler - Published on Amazon.com

I am building a shop, and decided to use 4' x8' external 3/8" siding for the ceiling. I do not have any assistance, and even cutting the panels in half leaves them very heavy to manipulate in place, over my head. Thus, some of the panels ended up not aligning properly, with overlap. I bought a Dremel MM40 to trim the panels, and to assist in aligning the holes for the myriad of electrical outlet, and light fixture holes. The Dremel worked flawlessly, trimmed the boards and trimmed the holes, even those right next to the beams. It was light enough to use for extended periods of time, over my head, and had more then enough power to trim the 3/8" panels, even those that were right on a rafter. I can see that I will use this tool in a multiple number of different settings, as I do cabinetry, and often need to trim lust a small edge. Previously that entailed taking the project apart, and using a band or table saw. Now I will just be able to do the trimming in place, without needing to dissemble the project, plus the sanding attachment will allow me to sand into corners that, previously were only accessible as a dissembled flat board.

This is a great tool, well made and should provide many years of service and expanded capacity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great product - works like a champ and makes cutting easy June 4 2012
By J. Walhs - Published on Amazon.com

I purchased this product when I had to cut a few holes in dry wall to feed some cable for a new switch. This product works as advertised and made it very easy to cut precise holes not only for fishing wire through the wall but for the outlet box. (I was actually cutting through old sheet rock so it is VERY tough and would have taken me a lot longer to get the edges right using a typical dry wall saw.)

I also purchased a metal cutting blade and it made quick work out of cutting down a kick stand to size for my daughter's bike.

My only complaint is that it did not come with the right attachments as stated on the side of the box. Instead of getting one wood and one wood metal plunge cut blade, I received two wood attachments. I wrote to Dremel and expect them to correct the problem but lesson is that you should carefully inspect the number of attachments and sanding pads that you receive.

That being said, I would definitely buy again and recommend this for anyone looking to purchase a cutting tool

3.0 out of 5 stars Worked good until the quick change fell apart. May 3 2012

This is a really powerful unit. It cuts quite good and stays cool even during long uses. The only problem (besides the cost of the blades which is a total rip off) is the quick changing head fell apart after about 4 uses.

The MM40 has a 2.5 amp motor and the MM20 has a 2.3 amp motor. If you are wondering it makes a huge difference. The MM40 is much stronger and runs cooler.
