The "Dressmaker's Handbook" is not intended to be the kind of encyclopedic guide to couture that Claire Shaeffer's book is, but it is full of gorgeous methods, extremely well-illustrated. The methods here tend to empasize machine sewing - which frankly is good for those of us who include speed as part of any project's appeal - but the essential handsewing techniques are explained and shown in detail. I can see a use for every method, and would have this book at hand for just about every project. I still regard Shaeffer's book as the main guide to couture, but this is a brilliant accompaniment.

This book is a very good source of professional industrial/home-sewing book. I don't know why it was label couture sewing, since there's no instructions at all on hand sewing techniques. However, the book presents sophisticated finishing alternatives, which are worth trying, in clear, comprehensive step-by-step format . To have a better view on haute couture sewing, I recommend other sources.

This book has nothing to do with couture sewing, and very little to do with even just high-end sewing. The book only goes over only very basic sewing and finishing techniques, expanding simple ideas into whole chapters of content by going over every minuscule variation. And then when the book does touch on what could be more complex sewing techniques, it only skims them, giving useless and unhelpful half information.

This might be a useful and interesting book for a teenager or someone who is just getting into sewing, but don't expect to learn anything from it if you've been sewing for a while.

Not for beginners, but inspiring. Illustrated beautifully throughout with clear photographs.

Even at the beginning of the book there is a table of contents with photos, so you know at a glance which subject you want.
I consider myself an advanced sewer, but there are techniques here I cannot wait to try!

Love it!
