Book Description

Oct 12 1986
In his triumphant best seller, James Michener unfolds a powerful and poignant drama of six young runaways adrift in a world they have created out of dreams, drugs, and dedication to pleasure. With the sure touch of a master, Michener pulls us into the dark center of their private world, whether it's in Spain, Marrakech, or Mozambique, and exposes the naked nerve ends with shocking candor and infinite compassion.
"A superior, picaresque novel...and a revealing mirror held up to contemporary society."

5.0 out of 5 stars The Drifters Sep 12 2002
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I first read this book years ago when I was living "behind the iron curtain" in the former Soviet Union, and it touched me very deeply. I just wanted to do what its characters did -- get out of the place where I was unhappy and look for a happier world. I did manage to get out and find a happier place... Now, years after I first read the book, I am bying to read and "re-live" it again on a my trip to the places described in the book -- Torremolinos in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. It's a fascinating and rich story, happy and sad. Read it and it may also lead you to a happier place....

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible journey July 16 2002
Format:Mass Market Paperback
What can I say, this book is a revelation of ideas that seem to be forgoten, or almost look down on, and trust me that is a bad thing. Dreamers and "reality chasers" on one side, and semi-revolutionaries and rare inteligent human beings on the other these characters were on a crusade for finding the holy grail of their own identity, and boy, they have done it style.
Free spirit and ideas about life have been forgoten. Life should be an experience and unfortunatelly not many seem to venture and take the challenge anymore. I guess we are pretty content culture now. We all chase the same dreams of money and wealth and we have indeed become popular culture of same goals.
Let me quote a last sentence of the book "...but now I believe that men ought to inspect their dreams. And know the for what they are" and I don't think it's meant to be in a way Churchill would say it.
Read the first page, and you wont let it down...

5.0 out of 5 stars For anyone who dreams . . . April 28 2002
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Michener has almost perfected the art of character development, and he does so from a creative angle - presenting six young adults as they unfold in the eyes of a 50 something year old man. The narrator at first watches from afar but by the end has become as caught up in the world of these adventurers as the reader is. I have never felt so close to characters as I have with these six. Nor have I ever yearned as much to actually see the places in Europe and Africa that these travelers not just visit, but experience. The rich descriptions bring the life of these places to the foreground of the novel so they almost provide a reflection of each character, with their dreams, zest for life, thirst for knowledge, and search for their own fulfillment. I ended this novel with a desire to meet each person and travel to each place, perhaps even following their exact path, perhaps with the subconscious hope of catching up with them.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Drifters are itty bitty
Beware of the small print. I gave it as a gift and the print was near microscopic and faint. I think that version hit the trash can.....but....it's a great book.
