Living in the grim aftermath of the Second Noble War, which killed off a third of the Earth's population, attractive but deadly trucker Raina Bowen is determined to bring down powerful businessman and presidential adviser Duncan Bane, who brutalized Raina in her youth. Aided by a handsome but emotionless mercenary known simply as Wizard, Bowen hauls her rig up to the Northern Waste in search of her target; meanwhile, Bane is setting traps and sending agents of his own, imperiling the duo but intensifying their feelings for each other. Though bouts of lovemaking might turn off fans of the Mad Max-ian adventure story and the action might wear down romance devotees, readers with a leg in both camps, or anyone looking for something different, will find Kenin's steamy, sinewy universe great fun, and further evidence that new Dorchester imprint Shomi is one worth watching. I love the gothic genre that Eve Silver (the more well known alias of the author) seems to have resurrected in the last couple years. She has a real knack for it.

This book is worth reading, if only for the range of emotion the author has in her tool box. For sure the book is very well written, even if the pace is, as the series demand, very quick. What is a bit more annoying is all of the cliches that make up the plot. Revealing some of them would give up major plot elements, but the most original thing in this book is the fact that the heroine is a trucker. Everything else, post-apocalytic winter, low-tech/hi-tech dichotomy, women's lib undone, are well threaded sci-fi themes. Unfortunately, nothing in the books really refreshes them.

It's still an enjoyable read if you don't expect a fresh sci-fi perspective and can gloss over all of the clichés that make the romance seem very déjà vu.
