Book Description

Think the fridge is just a place to stash the six-pack? Best-selling authors Karen Brooks and Gideon Bosker (whose Atomic Cocktails and Patio Daddy-O have sold over 100,000 copies) come to the rescue with Dude Food. Taking any guy from zero to sixty in the kitchen, Dude Food means maximum payoff-and big flavors-with minimal effort. Impress your boss with You Go, Risotto or woo a date with a Candlelight Caviar Omelet. Keep that Monday night football crowd in-line with Macho Nachos, or just thrill everyone you know with Jammin' Dishwasher Salmon (hold the soap!), Schroom Service, or the irresistible Electric Love Lounge Chocolate Chip Cookies. Dude Food is the essential guide to hip, contemporary, dudeful cooking.

About the Author

Karen Brooks is the coauthor, with Gideon Bosker, of Atomic Cocktails and Patio Daddy-O. She lives in Portland, where she is the restaurant critic for The Oregonian.

Gideon Bosker is the original dude food connoisseur. He's collaborated on loads of books, including Fabulous Fabrics of the '50s. And he's a doctor. A true Renaissance man, he lives in Oregon.

Reed Darmon lives in Portland and works as a graphic designer for The Oregonian. Like his coauthors, he is a pop culture nut and fan of retro chic.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for the novice!, Dec 18 2002

I ordered this book for my baby brother. I enjoy cooking and often entertain. As an experienced cook I could prepare these dishes but even I am put off by anything that requires me to zest three lemons. I've found that my husband is much more daring in the kitchen and he admits some of the recipes would be fun. The book offers witty commentary and the "dudes and don'ts" of entertaining are terrific. If you are looking for wit and special meals for the weekend this book would be fine. For everyday survival, this is not what you want.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dude Review, Sep 27 2000

At first, I was turned off by even receiving this book as a gift. I am 22, green behind the ears, and fresh out of college. Yes, I've had my fill of Ramen and Mac & Cheese, but thought that this book was, well, beneath me. I thought that until I actually made some of the recipes. My dinner companion (girlfriend) was astounded by the food--I'm sure it helped that I made her faves! As soon as she walked in she commented on how great my place smelled. The dinner was fabulous, and made me love Dude Food. Dude Food is the only cookbook I own, granted it is not by any means thourough, but it is a great starter for guys like me. The recipes are simple to follow and every possible pitfall is laid out for you and explained. One of these days, when I stop ordering in, I'm going to try some more recipes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the bunch, May 25 2000

With bookstore shelves -- virtual or otherwise -- loaded with volumes on cooking and style, the Brooks-Bosker-Darmon team is in a class by itself. Dude Food, their latest treat, is filled with wit and substance. Each chapter is a unique blend of nifty -- and easy -- recipes, social commentary and dynamite graphics. I've made some terrific meals with this book, laughing all the way.
