2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment, Oct 15 2009
I'd read some good reviews of this show (some here on Amazon), and decided to give this Canadian production a fair shake.

Hugh Dillon stars as a cop, freshly arriving from Toronto to an ugly, nondescript suburb (not a "small town", as the packaging synopsis would have you believe), where he quickly finds himself on the trail of a serial killer. His chief suspect is a high school friend (Justin Louis). Through six one-hour episodes, he pursues the case through various twists and turns to a conclusion that is reasonably closed, but keeps the door open for further story-telling. Fair enough.

The show is nicely shot and for the most part capably performed (Dillon and Louis are both solid), but unfortunately falls short in terms of writing and style.

The plot is too linear, heavy-handed, and contrived to make for a compelling 6-hour drama. And, as all good Canadian shows should, it features a scene on a hockey rink. Sigh.

Durham County seems to think it is the second-coming of "Twin Peaks" (seemingly borrowing quite liberally from it), but instead has the depth of something more akin to "CSI: Miami" - although admittedly contains very little sunglass-wearing. Thank heaven for small mercies.

Stylistically, Durham County admirably strives to create a mood and a genuine sense of place, but it feels forced and doesn't manage to pull it off. I really liked the pylon motif - but it was used so frequently and the shots were so numerous that it turned the show into a caricature of itself. Seriously - there must be minutes of damn pylons throughout the run of the series, and they get pretty damn uninteresting after a while. Durham County lacks subtlety, and frequently gets mired in its own self-importance - much brooding and grand-standing and stumbling over itself to inform us all just how Evil is the Evil That Lurks,

I genuinely wanted to like this show, but it just isn't well-written, takes itself far too seriously, and is too self-consciously Canadian to really appeal to me.

4.0 out of 5 stars United States fan loves this show!!, Oct 31 2009

I saw an ad for this show in TV Guide. I usually try out their recommendations, expecially if they seem out of mainstream. I loved Hugh Dillion in Flashpoint and the fact this show was Canadian really sparked my interest more. I found the series to be thrilling, dark and delicious! Memorizing and even fun, I watched it religiously until I lost the cable company that we were using and went to a new one that didn't have the ION channel. WIth only 2 episodes left, I scrambled all over the net, looking to buy the DVD. The only place I could find it was Amazon.ca. I usually don't purchase media from other countries but this was a must have. It came within 2 weeks and I got to finish the wonderful series and then watch it again.
I highly recommend it to anyone who loves dark mysteries. My only problem is that season 2 is not available yet for purchase. I'll have it the minute it is.

I have to admit, I skipped over this series at the start - fell into Flashpoint and then backtracked to Durham County - LOVE LOVE LOVE it! Great story line, great acting. Can't wait for Season 2 on DVD.
