another brilliant concept,

This review is from: Red Dwarf Back to Earth (DVD)
Fans of the Red Dwarf series will love this homage to Blade Runner. It's brilliantly conceived, with many references to past episodes, and naturally hilarious. Unfortunately, this production is noticeably lower budget - resulting in little rehearsal time and no studio audience feedback. Also compared to other seasons, the Back to Earth series is only comprised of 3 episodes (when run back-to-back amount to 70min. total), which is a disappointment. Fans like me, will want more. As expected, there are lots of dvd extras, including 2 commentaries and the second disc. Given the originality and inventiveness of the Red Dwarf history, it's a relief to see the creativity continue with Back to Earth. This series is different but brilliant.

Is it worth it?,

If you are a die hard fan of Red Dwarf, then get the dvd. Otherwise, not worth the price. It's three episodes, the comedy is not up to speck of the previous episodes. I was never a fan of a show that goes back to the "present" with the actors reenacting with common people. Otherwise, it is an expensive purchase for only three episodes, which do not rate as well compared to any episodes from Series 1 to 8. I actually feel ripped off since at the time of purchase, there was not a list of episodes in the details.

As other reviewers mention, these episodes (really 3 parts of the same episode) lack a laugh track. This is Season 9's greatest flaw. It messes with the pacing and enjoyability of the program. That said, I'm very tempted to buy the DVD in the faint hope that it will help the chances of them producing additional episodes. Maybe with some extra cash, they'll have the chance to get it right with future seasons.
