Book Description

Nov 19 1998
It is a complete mind and body workout that develops concentration and reduces stress. Dynamic Yoga, based on the techniques of Astanga Vinyasa Yoga, is the fast, powerful form of yoga which has taken the yoga world by storm. It has attracted a lot of interest due to the claims that it can provide as effective a cardiovascular workout as a conventional exercise-to-music class. Thus it is attracting people from the fitness and ‘body culture’ world who are seeking new ways to keeping super fit. It is fast becoming the new Iyengar in yoga fashion terms.

About the Author

Godfrey began yoga practice in 1973 having seen his uncle, an Anglican minister, praying in tree pose. Since then, while mainly self taught he has studied widely and wisely with many Indian and Western teachers. His most fruitful studies, however, have been with Soten Genpo Roshi, Zen Master and Ramesh Balsekar, Jnani of the Vedanta tradition. Without them Godfrey would no doubt still be wandering lost in the confused mists of the contemporary yoga scene. Having opened the Life Center in London in 1992 Godfrey’s commitment to Ashtanga Yoga led to the development of a teaching form and programme now known as Dynamic Yoga. Based on a clear and pragmatic presentation of the internal dynamics of the yoga method it blends the precision of Iyengar Yoga, the sensitivity of Vinniyoga and the potency of Ashtanga Vinyasqa Yoga, making them all accessible to all levels of student in a single approach. This was first collated in the book ‘Dynamic Yoga’, and has since been refined in ‘15 Minute Yoga’ and ‘Hatha Yoga Breath by Breath’.This approach to yoga practice is unique, in its combination of pragmatic utility, technical comprehensiveness, and its firm grounding in the teaching’s of Patanajali, from which it derives its remarkable potency.

Since 1996 Godfrey has been running a dedicated yoga training centre in Ibiza, Spain.

I am very critical of many yoga books out there, but this one won me over. If you are in search of a book to get you started with your home yoga practice, or want further explanation of what you are doing in class, get this book. You can actually use it beside you while you practice as the workouts are mapped out with tiny pictures and a pose number so you can easily get to the expanded reference page.
I found Godfrey Devereux's writing on this art/science to be in depth without going into the esoteric. I also like how he placed an asana glossary at the end according to their Sanskrit name.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's got it ALL Mar 7 1999

I just purchased this book along with Power Yoga by B. Birch ... As good as Birch's book is, THIS one is better! The pictures are a good size and VERY clear, and the book provides a wonderful set of series at the end to accommodate various levels of competence and also to address those moments when there just isn't quite enough time to get in a complete series. I'm sure you'll love it.
