Though they hail from Springfield, Massachusetts and spent their early career touring all over New England, Staind's sound is very different from the skewed indie rock of East Coast forebears like the Pixies and the Lemonheads. Indeed, they have far more in common with the melancholy metal of Washington State's Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains. Staind first rose to prominence thanks to a helping hand given by Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit. Despite at first hating them for the gross-out artwork of their Tormented debut, Durst was mightily impressed by their rampaging live show. He invited them down to work with him in his hometown Jacksonville, then signed them to his own Flip label. The result is Dysfunction (actually recorded and mixed in Seattle with ex- Soundgarden producer Terry Date), a rumbling, thundering outburst of grunge, most notable for the dramatic, Staley-esque vocals and torrid, tormented and painfully confessional lyrics of Aaron Lewis--an appropriately fraught and thought-provoking soundtrack for these unstable times. Seattle is alive and well, and living in New England. --Dominic Wills

1.0 out of 5 stars Staind's worst. July 13 2004
Format:Audio CD
Simply put, this album is garbage. I really have no idea what anyone sees in these guys. The vocalist is whiny, boring, and like every other nu-metal band out there. His attempts at trying to yell and sound heavy are a complete joke. The only song that's not painful to hear is "Home", and even that gets redundant after three listens.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard, very Hard Jun 24 2004
Format:Audio CD
To tell you the truth I never heard of staind when this album came out. Not untill Break the Cycle, but when I heard it I was fixed on the Band. This album mixes Hard rock with aaron Lewis amazing acoustic. I can only hope that staind stays with the hard stuff and throws in the ocational acoustic song.

Suffocate 9/10 - hard very hard

Just Go 8/10 - soft and hard at the same time

Me 9/10 - Aaron Lyrics make this song

Raw 7/10 - Hard Very Hard

Mudshovel 10/10 - The best song on the album

Home 7/10 - Its alright, when I am driving in my car and listing to this song I kind of want to go home

Flat 7/10 - The sound is good

Crawl 8/10 - another Hard song

Spleen 8/10 - A nice way to finish off the album, or weight

Black Rain 9/10 - very Dispressing like the rest of the album

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid Jun 20 2004
Format:Audio CD
Staind has made a statement here with their first major label release. Disfunction combines grundgy guitars with powerful meaningful lyrics. Hard song like "Raw" and "Mudshovel" get your blood pumping, while the Hidden track "Excess Baggage" takes a softer approach to calm you down. The only bad thing about this CD is That is doesn't have many songs. But the great quality of every song makes up for it. If you enjoy bands like Seether or Cold then this CD is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best album from Staind
I've listened to 14 Shades Of Grey, Break The Cycle, and Dysfunction. Dysfunction is easily the best staind has ever done and by the sounds of it, ever will do.
