Charlotte's Web. Stuart Little. The Trumpet of the Swan. What other books even approach these masterpieces of children's literature in humor, poignancy, and long-lasting influence? E.B. White's three award-winning classics have been brought together in a very welcome gift set for any young reader. The hardcover editions feature the original, oh-so-memorable pictures by Garth Williams for Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little, and wonderful, all-new illustrations by Caldecott Honor artist Fred Marcellino for The Trumpet of the Swan. White's ingenious blend of fantasy and the natural world has a timeless appeal. After reading Charlotte's Web, what child has not cried out to save a spider from a cruel, crushing heel: "Wait! That could be Charlotte!" Read them once or a hundred times--the memories will linger forever. (Ages 8 to 12) --Emilie Coulter --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

E.B. White, the author of twenty books of prose and poetry, was awarded the 1970 Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal for his children’s books, Stuart Little and Charlotte’s Web. This award is now given every three years "to an author or illustrator whose books, published in the United States, have, over a period of years, make a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children." The year 1970 also marked the publication of Mr. White’s third book for children, The Trumpet of the Swan, honored by The International Board on Books for Young People as an outstanding example of literature with international importance. In 1973, it received the Sequoyah Award (Oklahoma) and the William Allen White Award (Kansas), voted by the school children of those states as their "favorite book" of the year.

Born in Mount Vernon, New York, Mr. White attended public schools there. He was graduated from Cornell University in 1921, worked in New York for a year, then traveled about. After five or six years of trying many sorts of jobs, he joined the staff of The New Yorker magazine, then in its infancy. The connection proved a happy one and resulted in a steady output of satirical sketches, poems, essays, and editorials. His essays have also appeared in Harper’s Magazine, and his books include One Man’s Meat, The Second Tree from the Corner, Letters of E.B. White, The Essays of E.B. White and Poems and Sketches of E.B. White.

In 1938 Mr. White moved to the country. On his farm in Maine he kept animals, and some of these creatures got into his stories and books. Mr. White said he found writing difficult and bad for one’s disposition, but he kept at it. He began Stuart Little in the hope of amusing a six-year-old niece of his, but before he finished it, she had grown up.

For his total contribution to American letters, Mr. White was awarded the 1971 National Medal for Literature. In 1963, President John F. Kennedy named Mr. White as one of thirty-one Americans to receive the Presidential Medal for Freedom. Mr. White also received the National Institute of Arts and Letters’ Gold Medal for Essays and Criticism, and in 1973 the members of the Institute elected him to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a society of fifty members. He also received honorary degrees from seven colleges and universities. Mr. White died on October 1, 1985.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Triple Crown of White's Fictional Work July 13 2004
Format:Paperback
My 6-year-old daughter and I throughly enjoyed all three stories.
Most Creative Story: The "Trumpet Swan" because of the way White takes the reader to different places and settings through the eyes of Louis the Swan.
Most Profound Story: "Charlotte's web". Of all my years of education it took this simple book to grasp a real appreciation of nature and the web of life.
Funniest Story: "Stuart Little". Most of us have on more than one occassion laughed ourselves to tears upon reading, hearing, or watching some funny event. My last time occurred when reading about the trials and tribulations that Stuart had to endure in order to wash himslef in the morning (Picturing him swinging a mallot to turn on the hot water was for me hysterically funny!). I found the Stuart Little of this book much more cute and amusing than the one in a recent movie with the same title.

But this isn't work to other swans and actually Louis was in love with the beautiful swan, Serena, and she spurns hin because he was defective. And Louis's father, the old cob, does a difficult thing. He stoles a trumpet so his son would be able to win his love. Louis wins on his love and pay the trumpet money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stuart Little is a good book May 19 2002

Format:Paperback
Stuart Little is a mouse and he is a great help around the house, but sometimes he gets into trouble, like when he got dumped in the garbage dump. I think it's cool how a human mommy and daddy had a baby who is a mouse instead of a kid. I like how Stuart liked Margalo the bird.
Kids that should read this book should be 4 or up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charlotte's Web/Stuart Little Jan. 10 2000
By Colleen Lim Tai Siew - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
These 2 books are not just fun and adventure but inlaid with more in-depth meaning. Friendship, trust and encouragement between 2 different species Charlotte (the spider) and Wilbur (the pig) - applies to people as well, whether you are of different races or colour
Take another example Stuart Little, despite the fact that a cat traditionally catches mouse, Snowbell (the cat) dismisses this tradition to save and befriend Stuart Little (the mouse). What more, human parents chose to adopt a mouse instead of their own human being to display selfless love.
These 2 titles make good moral reading for children.
They have accompanied me through childhood to adulthood and has thought me to be sensitive to people's feelings.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Trumpet Review March 22 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
After Sam Beaver stumbles apon a lake and Louis the swan is hatched, the adventure begins. Louis was born without a voice but that didn't stop him from going to school, getting a trumpet, saving a life, recieving $4,000.00 from playing his trumpet, and getting a slate. On his adventure Louis get's a mate, goes to the Ritz, and just makes it through his swan life.
I thought this was a facinating book with fun facts and rich language. It is completely enjoyable and will make you laugh and cry. Out of all of E.B White's books I read, this has to be #1.
I recomend this book to anyone who likes romance and animals. 8-12 year olds will expecially love this book with it's humor and many other qualities.

5.0 out of 5 stars Authentic Children's Books - Nov. 2 2006
By bkm425 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
So many kids books are written so poorly, and with such poor structure and weak story lines, they make it hard to convey any sense of flow or emotion to your kids. To pick up these classics reminds one of the golden age when authors wrote stories with meaning and impact. Glowing descriptions, scene setting introductions to chapters, polite conversations recorded in proper English, all this is the heritage of EB White and these books. Highly, highly recommended - your kids will not want to stop reading and listening...makes bedtime each night a joy because they can't wait to find out what happens next.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great book - it has adventure and entertainment. Feb. 1 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The best part of this book was when the sail boat race took place. I liked that part because the policeman fell in the water. Also, I liked being able to see the world through a mouse's eyes. Margalo is a great character in the book because she is smart and she helped Stuart. I am looking forward to reading another book by E.B. White, such as Charlotte's Web and the Trumpet of the Swan.
