5.0 out of 5 stars unappreciated classic Mar 27 2005

I want to recommend this long-forgotton, out-of-print book to anyone interested in jd macdonald. I've read dozens of his novels, the good and the bad (just a few of those), but this is a personal favorite. If you want plot-driven, suspenseful, escapist fare combined with a profound point of view, this is it.
4.0 out of 5 stars An oldie but goodie Mar 29 2013

This is a vintage John D. MacDonald Fawcett Gold Medal book from the mid-1950s. Its a terrific story filled with interesting characters that holds up amazingly well after more than 50 years. The plot concerns a hotel manager who falls in love with the wife of a mobster. They run away together to Mexico with the gangsters hot on their trail. When the bad guys find the runaway couple they kill the girl and think they have killed the hotel manager. After that the story is full of great twists and turns and ends with a last big surprise. No wonder MacDonald's books were so popular back in the fifties. A great story with well rounded characters is always a fun reading treat no matter when it was written.
