Best Kid's Bible,

This is the best kid's Bible on the market. This is more than just a regular Bible with a few pictures and a page to record your "special days". It does have over 200 full page colour illustrations that are tastefully and faithfully done and that repeatedly enamor our 3 and 5 year olds but it also has other features that make it especially good for kid's as they grow up with it. There is a dictionary at the back along with lists of Bible promises, the way of salvation (in both words and easy to explain symbol-diagrams), lists of verses, charts and diagrams of particular themes, a Bible reading plan, short and simple introductions to each book, etc. And not only are the words of Christ in red but so is the chapter and verse numbering which is a valuable touch for helping in memorization. The font is larger than typical which also allows for easier reading for those whose eyes are still developing (or for grandparents who are reading with their grandkids).My one complaint is that there is only one cover available (there used to be two options). As a father of three, it would be nice to have some cover options so that one can choose between a variety of covers to better identify which Bible belongs to which child at a glance. Also, the one available cover may appeal to younger children when the Bible itself would still be good for any child elementary school age (even into junior high). Of course the ESV translation is exceptional, combining word-for-word accuracy with the accessibility of plain and modern English. It retains theologically charged words rather than translating them with a phrase which actually makes the text more easily memorized (as well as giving a natural context for parent-child or teacher-student teaching). All this combines with an extremely reasonable price. Easily and by far the best children's Bible on the market.

ESV Children's Bible - old school,

Purchased 2 copies of the ESV Children's Bible; one for my 5 year old son and one as a birthday gift for my niece. I am returning both copies. There are lots of pictures, but the artwork seems dated - like Bible literature from the '70s or '80s. In thinking of my niece, this also isn't a "pretty" edition. As well, I don't think my young son needs to see a picture of Absalom hanging by his neck from a tree with Joab poised to kill him with a spear.There are some good study helps and a dictionary at the end. But again, the format seems a little outdated and it's a few years beyond my son's ability to make use of.

We bought two of these Bibles for our 3 year olds for their birthday. While they won't be reading for some time yet, they wanted a Bible just like mommy and daddy's. The plentiful (over 200)pictures keep them interested during their own quiet times. The extra material in the back is also useful and geared for children including a plan of salvation, memory verses, and a short dictionary of Bible terms. I chose this Bible over other more, simplified Bibles because I wanted a full-text that would last until the children were in middle school. I think I've found it.The only things I would change -- I would print it on heavier paper. My children are not rough on books, but their fingers have a harder time turning this paper. (Note: this is not onion skin paper, as is common in some Bibles like my Ryrie, but seems to be standard Bible weight paper). I like the amount of pictures, but the style of picture is not my favorite. They all look Greek to me, when fashions changed throughout time. A great Bible for kids under 14. The BEST feature of this kids Bible is its translation use - the ESV version. This Bible comes also with a great number of pictures, cross-references, introduction, and in the appendinx: a plan of salvation, memory verses, and a short dictionary of Bible terms.This this Bible tries to accomplish a lot besides providing the most accurate Bible text,such as: introducing Christian theology, encouraging verse memorization, providing a dictionary of terms, including helpful illustrations. This Bible fails in a number of areas: 1) the images and illustrations are not the best quality or very accurately conveying the time period and culture of the people. 2) the paper quality is quite poor (not onion thin, but could be thicker so the pages do not break so easily). Looks and feels like recycled or poor-quality paper. 3) the audience for this Bible (due to the introduction, the "plan of salvation" (which is about "decision theology"), and the terms chosen to be included in the dictionary) is geared only to the Evangelical American Christians (calvinist theology). This is by FAR NOT an ecumenical Bible that tries to include Roman-Catholics, Orthodox, Lutherans, or Anglicans in its readership. I was quite dissapointed by the sectarian inclination of this Bible when it came to the extra notes. That is the reason why I could not give this book 5 stars. The Bible text and translation work (ESV version) is great and very accurate. AND I did buy this copy as a gift for my 5-year old niece whose family is Baptist (the parents were very happy). This is not just for children. If you are new to the bible or want a better understanding of it there is no better tool. This bible clearly defines the words that adults are generally expected to know out of the bible. It breaks the stories and their meanings down so well that anyone can understand. I keep it at home and use it often comparing it to my King James version for clarity.
