Product Description

Picking up where Rex Harper’s first book, An Otter on the Aga, left off, An Eagle in the Cupboard follows the fortunes of the Cornish RSPCA center through one of its most testing 12 months. Once more it is a mixture of funny, touching, and sometimes moving animal stories. And once more it features a cast of unforgettable characters, like Alfie and Blue, two hideously mistreated greyhounds that are rehabilitated at the farm, as well as the return of old favorites from Rex's first book, including his loyal dog Moss. Throughout, Rex evokes the sights, smells, sounds, and spirit of the Cornish countryside in all its timeless beauty. He also encounters sickening cases of animal cruelty committed by humans unfit to care for any living thing. Funny, warm, and evocative, it is a book that is, once more, set to melt and occasionally break the hearts of animal lovers everywhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's not James Herriot but it's quite good., Aug 2 2011

This review is for the hardcover edition measuring 9 1/2 X 6 1/4 having291 pages but no photos at all.
Once again I am baffled by the publisher's decision NOT to feature a photo section in a nonfiction book that could CLEARLY use some.
There is one other MINOR gripe I have about this book...and others I have seen which did this as well.
Between EVERY chapter they have inserted 3 BLANK PAGES.....ostensible so each new chapter could start on a right hand side page...which incidentally it could EASILY have done in nearly EVERY chapter without blank pages.
Not a big deal but it smacks of trying to make the book SEEM larger than it really is..by 'plumping' it with unnecessary paper.
'Nuff said about that.
All in all, despite some minor complaints I found the book very enjoyable.
Light and airy there are not really that many genuine crises they deal with but it's a good 2 day read for the average animal story lovers.
Not in the same league as James Herriot but still quite enjoyable.
Recommended.

Most excellent story. It is fun to see how they run animal shelters in other parts of the world.
