Well-Placed Nostalgia...For Collectors,
By
This review is from: Early Stages; The Official Bootleg Box Set 1982-1987 (Audio CD)
I just picked this up the other day and it blew me away. This 6-CD collection is made up of radio recordings of Marillion during their "Fish" years. The first two discs are from before Marillion released their first album, Script for a Jester's Tear, and you can hear the subtle changes that the songs that made up that album went through. Listen to Garden Party as it went from the first disc (Sept 82) through to Disc Four (August 83) and you can really see how the band progressed and how their fans' devotion to the band changed. Although they were labelled as a Genesis Clone prog act, listening to these discs reminded me just how much this band rocked. Crank this up, bring out your air guitar and grow back your mullet; this collection is great. It's unfortunate that there is nothing here from the Misplaced Childhood tour, and that might be the only drawback--OK maybe two versions of Grendel is a bit much). Still if you're fond of those old Fishy Marillion days; or even if you're a new fan and wish to listen to their roots...this is a great box set.

Fish in his prime ...,

This set of concerts is definitely when the Fish era of Marillion was at it's prime. They are very tight through all the different sets. Definitely worth the buy.

I've been a fan of Marillion since their first album. I almost waited too long to get this boxset. These discs give a very good listen to the early days of Marillion. Great sound, considering the time and equipment available then. Multiple versions of the same song show how some tunes evolve. "Fugazi" is to me what "Grendel" is to many others so it's neat to hear live versions of this song. Add the "Hotel Hobbies/Warm Wet Circles/That Time Of The Night" trilogy and this collection becomes a much welcomed addition to my Marillion collection.

This is a real gem for fans. Some fantastic versions of classic Marillion songs. Audio quality is great, especially for the pre-digital recording era. If you are a fan of Fish-era Marillion, this ia a no brainer!

First of all i have to say that I am a major fan of the Fish era Marillion. I play them constantly because they are so unique. When Fish left the band I was crestfallen. I followed Fish's solo career, rather than the Hogarth fronted version of the band. I have actually met Fish and had a few cocktails with him back on the Sunsets on Empire tour. This collection of "bootleg" CDs are really very interesting...they don't sound like bootlegs at all. The sound and production are way beyond what i was expecting. To hear the development of songs like She Chamelion are a real eye-opener. and the strength of their more familiar songs is impressive. Sure, this set is a little over-priced, but I take pride in owning it. and I recommend it to all the FREAKS. it's just spectacular. |
