The subject of Easter Island was a perfect choice for Kenna to showcase his work. The mysterious beauty of the island is highlighted by his careful use of light and form. As usual, there are a lot of decent compositions with a few really stunning works. A fallen statue with a puddle in its eye reflecting the sky is one of my favorite photographic images of all time.

Easter island masterpiece,

This is my first book by Michael Kenna an I can say in all honesty that I will be getting some more of his books. His technique is very deliberate - a signature. The images are powerful and invite multiple sittings to soak them in.. There is an air of desolation and silence in his pictures, but also of calm.. of time moving. You can see time "move" while also feeling the immutability of the Moai.As for the book, the tactile beauty and quality in printing, binding is exceptional. Nazraeli press have done a wonderful job. The flysheets in powder blue contrast with the orange cover.. which lift this book of black and white photographs from the anonymity of the standard formats. The images pop from the pages, thanks to a layer of spot varnish (something ALL b&w books should be doing. I especially appreciated the cotton covers. I would hesitate to lend this book.. it will not be leaving my library anytime soon... but you are welcome to look through it in my home! 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful
