I ordered this cookbook after reading a small article about it in my local newspaper. There are 24 different cake designs that you can make. I made the teddy bear cake a few days ago. It was very simple to make and turned out very cute. All the recipes use boxed cakes and icing that you can purchase in the store. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to make "fun" cakes.

Great for moms who don't have a lot of baking experience but want to make awesome cakes, Aug 4 2010

If you are an experienced, creative baker who aspires to be the next Cake Boss, this book is probably a bit basic for you. But, if you are like me, it's a great addition to your kitchen.
Prior to having my kids, I hadn't baked a cake in at least 15 years. I don't have a creative baking bone in my body. All I could manage for my oldest's first birthday was a basic cake with store bought frosting. I remembered all the awesome, fun cakes my mom made for us when we were growing up and wanted to do something more for my kids. A sheet cake with store-bought action figures stuck on the top seemed too generic and not very fun. So, I browsed through Amazon and found this book. It was exactly what I needed. It has 24 ideas cakes that anyone can make. It also has very tasty, (and very easy) frosting recipes. There is a good split between "girl" and "boy" themes as well as generic cakes you can use for either sex. She uses basic pans that everyone will have in their kitchen and gives an easy-to-decipher template for each cake. She also gives ideas for variation so you won't feel like you're making the same cake over and over.
The very first cake I baked was for my oldest's second birthday. It was the clown fish and to my tremendous surprise, it looked awesome, just like the picture in the book. Several of the moms at the party who knew me well, and know my lack of baking history, were convinced that I bought the cake somewhere. Another mom wanted to pay me to make a cake for her son's party. Instead, I loaned her the book. She also had tremendous success. My success bred confidence and I've since made several other cakes from the book and have started to add my own creativity instead of sticking to exactly what she says.
I highly recommend this book. I had hoped to make some fun cakes for birthdays but I got much more than that. We now have baker-quality cakes quite frequently. The kids love them and it's fun to see their faces when they see my new creations. I might just be ready to venture into Cake Boss wannabe territory.

This cookbook is a great, easy tutorial on how to make fun and delicious birthday cakes for your children. It was a huge tradition in my family to have Mom bake our birthday cake. These days, I've noticed that most moms are purchasing their kids' birthday cakes from grocery stores. This cookbook allows you to easily create that personal touch for your kids, and even involve them in the baking and decorating experience.
