Excellent Resource,
This review is from: Eating for Acid Reflux: A Handbook and Cookbook for Those With Heartburn (Paperback)
After being diagnosed with Acid Reflux a few weeks before Christmas, I purchased this handbook and cookbook Eating for Acid Reflux: A Handbook and Cookbook for Those With Heartburn. The doctor had given me groups of foods which produced acid: red meat, dairy, caffeine, sugar, alcohol, wheat. The book gave me a thorough understanding of the condition and was helpful in suggesting how to proceed discerning the foods which trigger an acid response. But it was the cookbook that I valued the most. Being close to Christmas, it was challenging knowing what I could eat. I found the recipes simple, delicious, and tasty enough for others to enjoy - not just tolerate. Certain ingredients in the recipes are noted "as tolerated," and the recipe is successful with or without that ingredient. I discovered that I could have many foods in the original list of things to avoid, but in lower quantities, or in non-fat varieties. It has opened up a whole new world, and now we are all eating healthier. PS. The stuffed apple dumplings are to die for.

Disappointing recipe section,

This review is from: Eating for Acid Reflux: A Handbook and Cookbook for Those With Heartburn (Paperback)
Excellent background information on the disease. One of the most complete descriptions and reasons why certain foods cause problems. However, I was very disappointed with the recipe section. I was expecting recipes for dishes that did not include foods that can cause heartburn. Instead, there were very common recipes, many containing several ingredients that GERD suffers should avoid, with instructions such as "if you have problems with onions, leave it out..." How helpful is that, really!?

Whether you suffer from occasional heartburn or full-blown GERD, this book is your quintessential guide to living a healthier and happier life. It provides a perfect blend of facts and accessible insight for improving your quality of life. The book is presented in two very comprehensive sections. The first part deals primarily with the technical aspects of this debilitating disease. The medical information is very well written in plain English yet it conveys the latest in scientific knowledge about acid reflux. You'll have no trouble learning all there is to know and what you can do to ensure accurate diagnosis and successful treatment. This first section alone could be a bestseller given the millions of people who struggle with any form of this disease. The second part of the book is equally remarkable in its presentation. It offers easily followed, delicious recipes that have been created specifically to abate GERD. Best of all, most of the ingredients are already in your cupboard! Any of the appetizers, soups, salads, entrees and desserts will satisfy even the most discerning gourmet. Each recipe includes a brief introduction, concise directions and nutritional analysis. Banish the bland and start eating your way to health. If you thought you were doomed to a painful existence, and a diet of bread and water, this book will change your mind and your life.
