Gr. 4-7. The title of this series, Parasites, is misleading. Though some volumes (Tapeworms, for example, by Toney Allman) are about parasites, these two books are about infectious illnesses: Ebola is a virus found in Central Africa, and Salmonella is a bacteria common in the U.S. Written in casual style, each book does a good job of describing how the microscopic creatures get around and how they do their work. There are also brief patient profiles and sections on symptoms, prevention, and the hope for a cure. The spacious design includes lots of clear, full-color microscopic views of the organisms as well as photos of scientists and patients. Occasionally, the tone gets too lurid ("The virus attacks and turns every part of the body into liquid slime"); given present scares about epidemics, kids will be interested without the theatrics. A glossary, a brief annotated bibliography, and a list of Web sites are appended to each book. Hazel Rochman
