This book is great for people interested in the exploration of Tibet. It tells the story of a dozen or so western eccentrics, who made it (or at least tried) to Tibet. The author's relaxed style fits the content and the book is hard to put down. A couple of things I have problems with; Lobsang Rama's story doesn't quite fit and I think the book would have benefited from excluding him altogether (read the book to see why). Also, the book could have been edited better. Now there are annoying repetitions, often within a few pages. But these are details, still a great read!

This review is from: Eccentric Explorers (Paperback)
Explorers are an odd bunch. It comes with the territory. After all, who else would willingly traipse off into terra incognita without accurate maps and assured supplies? Tibet was one of the last places on earth to open its doors to discovery. Even as late as the 20th century, explorers had to sneak in, often in elaborate disguise, placing their lives on the line to expose the well-guarded secrets of a forbidden kingdom.
In Eccentric Explorers, Michael Buckley, a Himalayan expert and Tibetan trailblazer, paints a penetrating profile of ten of Tibet's most intrepid and quirky explorers. Legendary characters like the irrepressible Alexandra David-Néel, POWs Peter Aufschnaiter and Heinrich Harrer, and Kintup the spy come to life as Buckley peels away the sand and grit of time to reveal what made them tick. What made them willingly return to Tibet time and again?
Eccentric Explorers gives readers a captivating chance to walk in the shoes of ten intrepid adventurers, to share their exciting exploits. Join their journey. Lace up your boots, grab your walking staff, and realize your own inner Indiana Jones. ~ Brandon Wilson, a member of The Explorers Club, and author of Yak Butter Blues
