Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

Remix albums are tricky things to pull off. Often, the remix compilation is the record label's way of eking the last drops from a commercially successful artist whose popularity is beginning to wane. Of course, this is not always the case. Echo Dek, a total dub overhaul of Primal Scream's excellent Vanishing Point, stands alone as a great album. This is largely thanks to the inspirational decision to employ legendary dub reggae producer Adrian Sherwood as chief remixer. Sherwood pays the originals much respect, yet still stamps his authority on proceedings. The resultant dubs--spacious, bass-heavy, multi-textured creations--are as good as anything Sherwood has done in the last five or 10 years. Tracks like "Kowalski", "Burning Wheel" and "Trainspotting"--which employed dub soundscapes in original form--are taken to the cleaners with great effect. There are a couple of clangers, but overall the result is stunning and at times invigorating. Echo Dek is one of the better remix albums, on a par with Massive Attack's dub remix No Protection. --Matt Anniss

5.0 out of 5 stars Adrian Sherwood is a genius!, Sep 9 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Echo Dek (Audio CD)
Many people love Primal Scream, many people loathe Primal Scream, and many people do both! However you swing, Echo Dek kicks Vanishing Point to the curb. It is heavier, spacier, more intense, way more interesting and powerful. There are many thoughts around about what Bobby G. and company wanted to do with Vanishing Point, and that perhaps it was scattershot in approach. No matter: they hired Sherwood to mix it up, and in the process he made a modern dub classic. Next stops should be checking out Sherwood's 30th anniversary reissues of On-U Sound material like New Age Steppers and Creation Rebel. Like my title says, the man's a genius.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond, Mar 10 2001
By S CORBETT - Published on Amazon.com

Forget those wretched Chill-Out compilations or Moby and the like, this is the real thing--a stern rebuke to the the Kenny G's of trip hop, downtempo electronica. "Echo Dek" is a very dark and trippy recording that practices at the altar of originality. I recommend it every chance I get to people who want enliven their cd collections...and are ready for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Are you Kidding?!?!, Aug 12 2000

I am gonna make this short and sweet. ANYONE who had ever been in that, i-am-too-messed-up-to-move, state of mind...would enjoy this CD. This CD stuns every Audio sensation in your entire body. Pop it in, sit down and just enjoy!! A must own, even for non 'Scream fans..

4.0 out of 5 stars interesting and entertaining, but not essential, Feb 8 2005
By J. Brady - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Echo Dek (Audio CD)
Obviously very expensive. Not essential for casual fans, Echo Dek features Dub reworkings of several songs from the Vanishing Point cd, the new versions created by Adrian Sherwood. But completely devoid of anything familiar from that cd - nothing in the way of lead vocals, choruses or traditional song structure. ( DUH - that's why it's called "dub" )Layers upon layers of echo laden drum and bass tracks, snippets of vocals. A few trippy sound effects here and there. Buy it if you MUST ( I did, and rather enjoy it ), but this is for serious fans and completists only.
