Review

"This book is for people who want to do something to lighten their impact on the planet. The small steps cost us little in the way of effort, money or time, but the cumulative effects can be enormous."
—David Suzuki

"Everything you need to know to make green, non-toxic, Earth-friendly consumer choices – and to be a bang-up planetary citizen – is in this book. Its comprehensiveness is mind-boggling! My fondest hope is that a well-thumbed copy becomes a fixture in every Canadian home."
—Rick Smith, Executive Director, Environmental Defence

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for every Canadian household May 10 2007
Format:Paperback
Vasil has created a comprehensive guide to living in more environmentally friendly, sustainable, and healthy ways. Her style is clear and entertaining, with just a tad of (very appropriate) preachiness. Every Canadian household should have a copy of this book. And the fact that the book itself is forest-friendly—-vegetable inks “Printed on 100% Post-Consumer Paper” from a biogas powered mill, bound with recycled glue—-is consistent with its message.

There is no single word for how fabulous this book is, so I'll make one up: god-freakin-damn-fantabulously-amazing.

Seriously. I read a lot of environmental, current affairs, and social activism books - and this is one of the best. Clear, concise, full of sidebars, useful references, wry comments and witty dialogue, this book focuses on Canadian goods and services specifically. Want to know what is banned in the E.U. but not even on Health Canada's radar? How much oil you use a day outside of your car? Or how about which alternative, eco-friendly, non-toxic, sustainable products, companies, retailers, and websites to use instead of your regular nail polish, shaving cream, laundry detergent, mattress, or lightbulb? The one you know isn't great for the earth - and which, by the way, is probably ten times worse than you think?

For those of you with weak stomachs, sensitive nerves, or whom already think humanity is doomed, be warned - this book is blunt, unapologetic, and uncompromising. You'll feel ill reading it, but ignorance isn't bliss - in this case, it's deadly.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Most Useful Books You'll Ever Read Sep 21 2007
By Debra Purdy Kong TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Want to help save the planet one simple step at a time? Adria Vasil's highly entertaining and informative ECOHOLIC will supply all the tips you could possibly need. Her informal and often humorous approach to some pretty grim facts about the amount of toxins we're wearing, inhaling, and decorating our homes with (and this is only a fraction of the big picture she presents) is enough to make one want to stay in bed, except that most bedding is chemically saturated. Adria demonstrates how everything we buy, consume, and excrete, effects our planet's increasingly fragile ecosystem. But she also offers practical solutions to coping with our toxic environment.

Although I've been recycling for years and shop as little as possible, I'm not a staunch environmentalist. Yet, this book made me realize there's many more eco-friendly things I can do. While plenty of information is given, Adria also provides many useful websites for further information, though how many of these websites will be around three years from now is anyone's guess. Still, given the growing concern for our planet, there will always good information somewhere on the Net. Do yourself and your children a huge favour. Buy the book, try some of those tips, and help make this planet a little better.
