The theatrical feature Eden of the East: The King of Eden (2009) takes place six months after the hit broadcast series ended--when Akira Takizawa vanished after liberating 20,000 NEETS (young men with No Employment, Education or Training) and saving Japan from destruction by missiles. Saki Morimi kept the "Noblesse Oblige" cell phone that identified Takizawa as Seleçao No. 9, one of 12 agents charged by the mysterious Mr. Outside with saving a faltering, apathetic Japan. She flies to New York when an old message gives her a clue to his whereabouts. Takizawa has once again had most of his memories erased, but he and Saki rekindle their relationship while outwitting threats from the remaining Seleçaos. Voice actors Jason Liebrecht and Leah Clark once again make Takizawa and Saki a singularly engaging and believable couple, even in the most improbable circumstances. As he did in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, writer-director Kenji Kamiyama uses a reference to J.D. Salinger as a key element in the plot. (This time, it's the scene in The Catcher in the Rye in which Holden Caulfield watches his sister Phoebe trying to catch the golden ring on the carousel.) The King of Eden ends halfway through the story, as Saki and Takizawa prepare to return to Japan to resolve the battle of the Seleçaos. But Kamiyama builds the suspense so skillfully, the viewer feels impatient for the release of the second feature, Paradise Lost, rather than cheated. The theme of Eden of the East, the need for young people to revitalize the spirit and economy of Japan, seems prescient in light of the reports of young Japanese volunteering in record numbers to assist in the cleanup of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The Blu-ray disc (and the second DVD) contain Air Communication--the original series recut into a prequel feature (only in Japanese). (Unrated, suitable for ages 14 and older: profanity, violence, nudity, risqué humor, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Product Description

The intrigue goes international in The King of Eden, a feature-length conspiracy thriller that continues the action of the acclaimed Eden of the East. The deadly game that began in Japan now intensifies on the streets of New York City. The rules are the same: Do whatever it takes to win. Die if you lose.

Takizawa prevented Japan's destruction - and then he vanished. Six months later, clues lead Saki to the Big Apple in search of her missing friend. Meanwhile, the remaining Seleção are plotting their final move. Some of them would prefer Takizawa dead and out of the way. Some might even be willing to help him achieve his goals. Unfortunately, some are prepared to destroy everything if it means claiming checkmate in Mr.Outside's puzzling game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simply romantic May 21 2011

For those who enjoyed the "intrigue" of the original TV episodes of Eden of the East, this part 1 of 2 (?NA release date of Paradise Lost) movies carries on with the Selecao plot, but with little progress given to how the game might unfold, with the exception in the end that some more of the Selecaos appear to be eliminated. The main purpose of the King of Eden to me is to narrate the romance between Takisawa and Saki, in which Takisawa once again starts from square one with no memory of who he (or Saki) is or the meaing of Selecao. I find the romance very nostalgic of moments portrayed in the TV series. The bonding of the main characters through their common experience and desire for a bigger purpose in life is an enjoyable part of the story. As before, unbelievable details and depth of view of the backdrop in all the scenes. Simply astonishing. Just hope that Paradise Lost will be the conclusion to the Selecao story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Is it worth it. April 25 2011

Well if you enjoyed the series this movie is more of that but better, the animation is there and perfect, the focus on Akira's life before becoming a selecao, and Juiz gets more attention in the 2 films. King of Eden begins 6 months after the NEET Missile Crisis with Akira having his memory erased again. From there the identity of Akira is investigated and his search for answers about his past begins.

A must buy for those who watched the series.

Product Review: To clarify what exactly you get in this product. You get the movie King of Eden on DVD, Air Communication Film on DVD also on the same DVD are some extras. You also get King of Eden and Air Communication on Blu-Ray and the extras included on that disc. So you get 1 Blu-Ray, 2 DVDS, and the extras that come on each disc respectively. Probably one of the best values I have seen in a long time and hope to see most Blu-ray anime releases package a DVD copy with it. Also something to note is the case for this release is a DVD size case and not the thin and short Blu-ray case.

Blu-Ray: Contains King of Eden, Air Communication, and Extras
1st Dvd: Contains King of Eden
2nd Dvd: Contains Air Communication and Extras

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeping it going May 9 2011
By Cole Morse - Published on Amazon.com

Calling this a movie is probably not correct, it is just a longer episode in the series. Trying to watch it as a stand alone movie would not be practical, as the first episodes of the series contain all the character development, and develope the story. The negative reviews sadly did just this, watching only the movie. What they did was open a book half way through it, then complain the characters weren't developed and you know nothing about the story. The movies end without explaining because it was already explained, and there is another movie coming out to tie up the loose ends in this one. Please, do not pick up the movie believing you can watch it without watching the series. If you loved the series, you will love the movie. It picks up where it left off and moves on, and the end (just like the series) leaves you wanting more. Luckily, the next movie is coming soon. Here we even learn more about the "hero's" past, that make you go o yeah from things that were said in the first episodes.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Little Disappointing Jun 1 2011

After watching the series, I was really looking forward to this movie. Don't get me wrong, it was alright; just not as memorable as the series itself. This combo pack comes with the King Of Eden movie (DVD and blu-ray), dubbed, some special features I didn't look into, and a movie version of the series with subtitles. I prefer having subtitles most of the time, but the dubbing in the series kind of grew on me, so I was disappointed that Air Communication (movie version on the series) had subtitles instead. Overall, I guess it was worth the purchase.
