Fantastically done introduction to Pro Tools Editing..., Jan 1 2007

The "Skill Pack" series from Thomson is a new series of tutorial books that combines a CD of session data with a step-by-step book of exercises. This particular Skill Pack is a well-done, well thought out grouping of tutorials that covers virtually all editing techniques available in Pro Tools. After working through this book, the novice Pro Tools user will be able to do any sort of arranging that his/her imagination (or producer!) may dictate.
The book starts with an overview of all of the edit modes and tools and how to use them in practical ways. This progresses to a chapter covering LOTS of stuff I had not seen elsewhere on "Integrating the Edit Modes and Edit Tools". Then there's a jump to more advanced techniques in Grouping, looping and Tempo/timing, even covering an introduction to Beat Detective (the enigma and savior!).
The author uses memory locations in Pro Tools in order to move from tutorial to tutorial within each chapter, which is a GREAT way to pack a lot of material in without losing the reader. The other Thomson Pro Tools skill pack on mixing does this as well. This technique works WONDERFULLY well in a tutorial book such as this one.
Overall, this book succeeds in it's purpose of developing "a fundamental understanding of the design and philosophy of editing audio in Pro Tools" along with "Real-world practical application of editing techniques". The Pro Tools beginner or early intermediate user will greatly benefit from this book. On the other hand, there's not really much here that advanced Pro Toolers will not already know, but that's not the point of the book.
Congratulations, Michael White and Thomson, on delivering the goods in this installment of the Pro Tools "Skill Pack" series.
