“A truly excellent guide…it deserves a place near the computer of everyone in Canada who writes or edits.…The prose is often simple to the point of elegance…[the authors] are professional editors, after all: they know their stuff.”
Quill & Quire

Product Description

The essential Canadian guide – and reference shelf companion to The Chicago Manual of Style and The Canadian Encyclopedia.

The first edition (published in 1987 and selling over 7000 copies) established itself as an indispensable tool for editors, writers, journalists, government employees, students, teachers, librarians, copywriters, and marketing and public relations people – in short, anyone who uses Canadian English.

Editing Canadian English tackles the tricky style issues of writing in "Canadian" and sorts out the distinctions between British and American editorial style and language usage. Overall, this guide outlines where convention dictates certain usage and where a style decision comes down to choice. The four authors, all seasoned professionals with over one hundred years of editing experience among them, show readers how to make their own informed and consistent choices when dealing with peculiarly Canadian questions of usage.

2.0 out of 5 stars A HUGE disapointment., Mar 27 2009

I possess many style guides as I write for clients in Canada, the US, and the UK, so I often have to check and double check these regional differences as well as differences between press and book uses. Of all of my guides the Oxford Style Manual (for UK English) is the most comprehensive, and the Chicago (for US English) comes second. In comparison, Editing Canadian English is a joke, containing only a fraction of the information contained in the others. It doesn't even hold up to the comparatively ancient Canadian Writer's Handbook which I used in my university days and was hoping to update with this purchase. For one small example, the em dash doesn't even get a mention in this book yet it warrants a full page and a half in the Oxford. And while this may seem petty, trying to find out if the em dash is supposed to be separated from surrounding text with a space or not is the sort of detail I need to know. (For the record, Oxford, Chicago, and Canadian Writer's Handbook do not surround the em dash with a space but the Canadian Press Stylebook does.) Over all, I'd say keep looking for a better resource.

This is THE key reference for Canadian writers in all disciplines.

Having worked in marketing and communications and then transitioning into government policy research, I continue to use this as a reference for any questions I have. Their concordance table of spellings by particular dictionary (e.g. Webster's, Oxford Canadian, and a few others) is invaluable.

Anyone who does writing in any profession would greatly benefit from this book.
