A worthwhile "big-idea" book for the times. While usually well put together and well-written, it sometimes gets lost in generalities (e.g., the "characteristics" of decades) that dilute accuracy and meaning...
One wonders if having another co-author who is a social scientist (rather than relying on two journalists) may have strengthened the science and specificity of some passages. Those qualms aside, The Ego Boom is a worthwhile book.

This book was a great opening discussion on the self-orientation of current western society; how this self-affirmation has a tendency to narcissism and ultra-individualism is blinding people to societal needs. While there has been a move to individualism for hundreds of years this has only reached the extreme since the 1990's.
This book could have been much, much better, as it was too concise, had an airy tone, and somewhat lacked in specifics. There are very few authors who are addressing this from a non-ideological viewpoint and I hope many more will follow...

I enjoyed the book immensely. The author put his finger on what is happening today and how we react to it. A great read.
