Detective-in-training Cat Caliban meets her latest client when a pilot crash-lands in the middle of a family picnic. Toots Magruder confesses her suspicions that the plane was sabotaged, and tells Cat and her partner, retired cop Moses Fogg, a story that begins during World War II, when young women with a passion for flying traveled from all over the country to Avenger Field in Sweetwater, Texas, for the chance at the best flight training available and a coveted place in the Women Airforce Service Pilots. Those who succeeded, like Toots, flew some of the most dangerous missions of the war in every plane the Army owned, from single-engine trainers to sophisticated bombers like the Fortress and the Superfortress. Toots herself had been one of eight WASP who trained anti-aircraft gunners at Harlingen Air Base. In the final weeks before the WASP was disbanded, however, one of those eight, returning for the final graduation at Avenger, disappeared into the Texas sky and was never heard from again. Now, forty years after the women of WASP were sent home without jobs, severance pay, or veterans' benefits, two of the Harlingen Eight have died in similar accidents within days of each other, and Toots fears that a killer is at work. Protected only by an antique parachute and handicapped by a fear of flying, Cat must unravel the forty-year-old mystery before the remaining Harlingen WASP converge at the Dayton Air Show and provide the killer with a perfect opportunity to reduce their numbers to zero.

D. B. Borton's numerically=titled series just gets better and better. The early series were all centered around a recently widowed woman who started fulfilled her life's dream of becoming a private detective. In this one, she is there at a family reunion of a friend when a plane craches nearby. Upon investigation, the corpse is a woman who served in the military air force in WWII and Borton slips in a lot of historical fact. Most of which I didn't know. Great plotting delicious characters.
Highly recommended.

In Eight Miles High, Borton gives us two books in one--a fun, page-turner of a mystery, and a first-rate history lesson about some of America's most daring and courageous pilots, the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), the first women in history trained to fly American military aircraft. Once again Borton skillfully crafts her story with humor and insight into human nature, while at the same time bringing to light the under-recognized contributions the WASP made to the World War II effort. A must-read for mystery and history lovers alike!

History and a mystery, all in one book certainly held my attention from beginning to end.
Cat Caliban and Moses Fogg - neighbors, friends and now, most recently, partners under his newly acquired PI license, make a perfect match. It begins July 4, 1986 with Cat accompanying Moses to his annual family cookout, preferring his family over hers with some flack from her daughter, Sharon, on this decision. This day turned out to be anything but normal when a small plane crash landed in a nearby field. With held breath by the spectators, it was a relief to see the pilot emerge from the plane and to everyone's astonishment the pilot turned out to be a woman.
Heading their way, her first words were of sorrow for ruining their day and then introducing herself as Toots Magruder. She confesses her belief that the plane had been sabotaged and felt the need to hire a detective, unbeknown of who she was talking to. This is the beginning where Cat and Moses walked into a mystery that led back to World War II and Wasp (Women Airforce Service Pilots).
Toots, herself a part of WASP some 40 years earlier, told of a story with one of the eight women who were to attend their graduation at Harlingen Air Force Base located in Texas, disappeared into the skies never to be heard again. Now, recently, two more women die in similar accidents and Toots, fearing for her life, makes an appointment with Cat and Moses.
This is an incredible book written so vividly you feel a part of the story. Not only gives us a mystery that is a page turner from start to finish, but the history of these courageous women are brought into focus. I thoroughly enjoyed reading D. B. Borton's book and look forward to another episode with Cat and Moses at the helm.
