In my opinion, this is by far the best novel from the Black Library, and I would go so far to say that this would stand up on its own as a pretty good piece of science fiction without being propped by up the W40k franchise. While most of these novels are potentially monotonous accounts of various creatures and creations beating on each other, with the occasional truffle being thrown out about the rather interesting nightmare future history of the universe, this one has some fairly compelling character development.Granted the point of the horrible place that our distant descendents live in is that there is not supposed to be much of a human element to relate to, Eisenhorn is just human enough that we really care what happens to him. His struggle with the Inquisitor's line between purity+ignorance vs. heresy+knowledge, too much of either would undoubtedly end in disaster, is a quite a fascinating concept which is relatively unexplored in sci-fi. Very good. Definitely the high watermark from the Black Library, I hope they manage to reach it again.

Without a doubt the best Warhammer Omnibus. It's a great science-fiction read for new or seasoned followers of the Warhammer series.I debated between Eisenhorn and the Gaunt Ghost series (3 Omnibus) but decided this was the best read as you do not need previous knowledge of Warhammer to enjoy this series. Eisenhorm has a beginning and an end, the stories cover the career of renowmed character Eisenhorn has he investigates various crimes and battles the ruinous power. I especially enjoyed the development of his houseguard and followers. Once you discover you might want to move on to Ravenor if you enjoyed it. Not as good a Eisenhorn but still a solid 4 Stars with the added benefit of a new upcoming Omnibus with Eisenhord and Ravenor coming out in late 2012. Enjoy M

A tragic tale, Warhammer 40K style,

Dan Abnett is an absolute favourite of mine when it comes to science fiction, and one of the first authors I turn to when work is stressing me out or I have a few hours in an easy chair. Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn is one of Abnett's greatest characters, right up there with the infamous Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt.Games Workshop's Warhammer 40K world is a rich tapestry, and Dan Abnett one of its most skillful weavers. Eisenhorn lives some considerable time before Ibram Gaunt - indeed, Gaunt is an avid reader of the works of Eisenhorn's student, Gideon Ravenor (who is himself the subject of an excellent trilogy). Gregor Eisenhorn is an interesting and sympathetic character, and the reader is drawn into his struggle. One of the tropes of the 40K universe is that Chaos always corrupts in the end, and to watch Eisenhorn's struggle with the forces of entropy is deeply compelling. The omnibus edition is a great value, and as a bonus contains additional material outside of the trilogy which act as bridging material between the stories. One of Dan Abnett's very best.
